George Dobson signs

I can’t complain that I’ve never heard of him as I was calling for young players proven at this level that I’d never heard off!

George Dobson fits that re-build, released by Sunderland today, the 23-year old defensive holding midfielder that impressed on loan at AFC Wimbledon this past season joins on a 2-year deal.

No, thank you Josh Cullen

Josh Cullen said his goodbyes to Charlton yesterday, but it is us that should be thanking him. I would firmly put the West Ham midfielder at the top of the list of loan players I have seen come and go in my thirty-plus years as a fan.

Cullen has an undying desire to make it at West Ham and I really hope he does, but wherever he ends up those fan’s will be picking up a gem of a player and a thoughtful and determined young man.

A great point to bring home from Wales tonight.

Another defensive blockade and when we needed him Dillon Phillips delivered with the one big save of the night from Adomah.

The result was all the more significant as Lee Bowyer made seven changes to his line-up and changed the formation. Adam Matthews and Tomer Hemed didn’t travel due to small knocks and Sam Field and Jake Forster-Caskey started in a three-man midfield after long lay-offs.

Cullen signs Hammers extension

Josh Cullen fresh from his comeback game last night for the Addicks announced that this month West Ham have triggered a one year extension to his existing deal meaning that the midfielder will not be out of contract this summer.

A lot to be positive about tonight. Lee Bowyer signs a 3-year contract, a whole throng of players re-appeared on the bench and in the starting eleven. We keep a clean sheet for the first time in 17 games, we hold a promotion chasing Fulham side to a draw and we end the week another point off the bottom three.

Three in

Lyle Taylor, Sam Field and Josh Cullen back in the match day squad for Fulham. Sorry about the clickbait, but everyone’s getting a bit needy around here. 🤷‍♂️

Zero transfer news. Sorry. Log off now if you have to. Maybe the midfielder from Rangers. Less substantiated are Lockyer’s ex-team mates from Bristol Rovers. Striker Johnson Clarke Harris and midfielder Ollie Clarke who took over the armband from our Welshman. Then there’s the soap opera that is becoming Marcus Maddison.

And that’s about that on the jungle drums but Gallen and Bowyer have always done a very good job of keeping targets and potential signings very close to their chest. Andre Green being the most recent example.

No surprise unfortunately as we whimpered out of the cup again, but with obvious mitigating circumstances as an extraordinary young Addicks team that included a 16-year old lost to a far more experienced West Brom side.

Chris Brunt, Gareth Barry and Charlie Austin alone have played more than 1,600 games between them. Barry making his professional debut before seven of our lot were even born!

Cullen out until February

An ankle injury sustained in the game at home to Cardiff will keep Josh Cullen out for two months, possibly three, after a scan discovered damaged ligaments.

Cullen is pretty robust despite often leading the tackling stats during games, but did miss 10 weeks last season when he dislocated his shoulder. His injury is another huge blow to our already decimated squad.

This is a tough run, no win in six, and no clean sheets either, and our points total is stuck in the quicksand. The squad is decimated, and now Gallagher will miss Saturday after being booked. Josh Cullen will be out until after Christmas.

We have a bigger squad this season, two players for each position etc, but it is an infliction of Duchatelet’s ownership that once again too many of these players are brought in last minute, cheaply, not fit enough or have never been fit. Or all of the above.

I love this team, they really don’t give a flying do they? They will go toe to toe with anybody.

What an immense couple of games, and it would have been mortifying to walk away again with another fully undeserved defeat.

West Brom are a very good side, and were very good going forward on the counter, yet our team of bandaged up warriors stood strong and once again made their mark on this great league. With 9 men injured and Leko unavailable, we had a subs bench with four academy players on it, yet, again Bowyer was able to put out a team and strategy onto the pitch that gave our opponents a real headache all afternoon.. a bit like our magnificent noisy fans behind the goal.

Cullen is back

Josh Cullen is back in the building, but with just one day of the summer transfer window left there’s plenty of room for more.

Charlton announced the second season loan for 23-year old Cullen today, who I assume failed to impress West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini enough in pre-season to gain a Hammers’ squad number for the coming season. Many Hammers’ fans, possibly desperate for a bit of famed West Ham academy talent to break through, seemed bemused by the decision, but their loss is our gain, and Lee Bowyer mirrored the excitement of fans the latest signing brought.

Our first win there since 1980, although it’s only been a regular fixture during the Duchatelet era. Bowyer rested Lyle Taylor and Patrick Bauer who were carrying slight knocks. Skipper Jason Pearce, George Lapslie, Darren Pratley and Jonny Williams all came in and JFC, Lewis Page and Alfie Doughty were on the bench.

Over 2,300 Addicks sat amongst the scaffolding behind one goal and cheered and sung the Addicks to a comfortable win with both goals coming in the 1st half.

Bielik returns injured

Charlton had six players away on international duty – Lyle Taylor, Igor Vetokele, Krystian Bielik, Josh Cullen, Josh Parker and Chris Maxwell. The last three didn’t get to play although Cullen may get another chance on Tuesday when the Irish host Georgia.

Taylor’s long trip to the Cayman Islands ended most likely in disappointment, but Igor’s Angola qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations after they beat Botswana 1-0 on Friday. Bielik played for Poland’s U21 against England in a friendly at Ashton Gate and fell awkwardly in the 2nd half, but did finish the game.

A fantastic few home days for Addicks. Tonight was nowhere near the level of performance of Saturday, but 3 more points puts us in a very strong position.

Lee Bowyer made four changes. Two enforced with Reeves and Fosu replacing Bielik and Williams, both nursing hamstrings while Solly came in for an unfortunate Dijksteel and Josh Parker swapped with Vetokele. Jason Pearce was on the bench.

All the action seemed to happen in the first six minutes. Taylor put wide, Fosu hit the uderside of the bar and Bauer got a good block on a goalbound Burton effort. Then Taylor won a penalty and strolled up to score.

A fantastic performance from the Addicks today, and on the TV as well. After taking five minutes to settle we dominated the vast majority of the game playing some wonderful stuff, chasing every lose ball, and never shirking a challenge.

Of course it wouldn’t be Charlton if we didn’t have to hang on a bit at the finish, and after last week I was shuffling uncomfortably on the couch at the end.
