Travelogue

The first time I left the British Isles was on a school trip to Boulogne. Ever since then I have always been interested in the cities, countries and cultures out there in the wider world.

I have lived and worked in three countries and visited a fair few others but have only scratched the surface of this vast planet.

Writing and travelling are enjoyable bed fellows for me, so I have written about most of the places I have visited since I began this blog in June 2004. The links below represent my travelogue these past 19 years.

I am going to Chicago in July with my family ( children pretty grown up now ) any suggestions?
I have been once when I worked at Morgan Stanley many years ago. I stumbled across your blog, I grew up ( from the age of 6 to 20 ) in Erith so have lots of friends that support Charlton and actually played in a Charlton golf day a few years back and played against Dean Kyle ( really nice guy ) .
Hope you enjoy your trip home,
All the best from a long suffering Tottenham supporter.

Hiya, hope all is well. We have arrived in Chicago! Never got your second lot of notes about what to do while we are here but unfortunately it is raining so if you have a minute and could give us a couple of indoor suggestions that would be great. Had a brilliant time in NY. We went to dinner in a restaurant on Hubbard St last night and it was fantastic .
Guess we can watch the W.C. final tomorrow somewhere if it is still raining .

        • Raining! I’ll be there on Tuesday!!

Try the Field Museum, the Art Institute, Shedd Aquarium, Mario Batali’s Eataly, Second City Comedy Club, Top of the Hancock, Sears Tower, Adler Planetarium.

          Fado for the football.

Where did you have dinner last night?

We went to a great pizza place round the corner from the hotel call Quartino which was madly busy and at seven o’clock they said they had a two hour wait. We went away and came back ten minutes later and said we had flown in from London especially to go there and they laughed and gave us a table.
On our first night we went to Centro Fistorante which was really good and one of the best meals I have had in ages.
In fact we have been very lucky with the weather as we had a massive storm yesterday morning and it cleared in a couple of hours and has been very nice since.
We leave tomorrow for Naples. Do you still have your apartment here?
            Thanks for all the info.

          • Used to love Quartino. It’s owned by the guys that own Gibsons. Glad the weather improved, can get 4 seasons in 1 day there.

Yes, still have my apartment. In River North.

Have you had a chance of putting a few suggestions down yet for our trip to Chicago?
    Thanks.

We went down to China Town early tonight , was not impressed so we got back on the subway and came back to near our hotel and found a very good Chinese right on our door step!
Have a good trip to Chicago. Had a thought do you ever go to the London Golf Club when you are back in the UK?

      July 13, 2014
      • China Town is rubbish but really glad you enjoyed the city.

Sadly, despite living on an island with more golf courses per sq mile than anywhere else, I don’t golf, at least what you would pass as golf.

I did play once at the London Club as my old boss was a member. Think I has to buy golf socks for the occasion!

Yes we enjoyed Chicago & thanks once again for your help. In Florida now . We had the mother of all storms this morning ( haven’t seen one like it for about 25 years ) .
Shame about the golf as I am up the London Club a lot and it would have been nice to meet for a coffee some time. Hopefully Chartlon & Tottenham both have better seasons than last year ( shouldn’t be difficult ) and that maybe our paths will cross again sometime . All the best.

    • Hopefully our paths will cross.

Glad you had a good time in Chi, I am just on my way back. Enjoy the rest of your holiday.

Funny see Tottenham are in Chicago we ( my son and I ) only missed them by a few days . They hadn’t arranged the tour when we booked our holiday but it is a shame we weren’t there at the same time. I meant to say that the Chinese we went to in Chicago was PF Chang and I didn’t realise until we got to Naples that it is part of a chain. I thought they were very good and that is coming form someone that used to own a Chinese restaurant in Chelsea ( long story ).
Hope you are well and have a good weekend.

    • 17,000 there as well. Toyota Park is a nice little stadium. Shame you missed it.

You have me intrigued on the Chinese restaurant!! You can explain to me over a Tsingtao one day.

Not that I’m stalking you but we’re off to Florida on Thursday, Miami though.

Yes , I am sure we would have lots to chat about. I spent aged from 6 to 20 living in Erith not a million miles from where you lived I guess being a Charlton supporter . And having gone to Tottenham with my dad at an early age and also to the Victory parade in ’67 for the F.A. cup supported them ever since even though I was born in East Ham ( but left when I was a few months old so that was a lucky escape ) I went on holiday with your former Chairman ( T.J. ) but please keep that to your self and I had twenty years in the City working the last eleven for M.S. and that’s just me so we might need more than one Tsingtao !!
        Enjoy Miami .

  6. High Chicago@ follow your CAFC Blog and also your Travelogue which is good stuff (ands it seems I have been to a number of places on the list so it’s been useful either before or after my trips, especially Chicago anmd Vancouve).
Thinking of places closer to home, I have driven past Lille so many times but never stayed there and saw it was on your list. It may be me but I thought I would relay back that when I click on the Lille link it takes me to LA, (and clicking on city before that doesn’t do the trick either).
Hope that is useful. Will be thinking of you dipping your toes in the Pacific trying to enjoy to yourselves whilst I the put up with the journey to the Valley, with no doubt a cloudy sky and railn.
