Charlton Athletic 0 West Bromwich Albion 1
No surprise unfortunately as we whimpered out of the cup again, but with obvious mitigating circumstances as an extraordinary young Addicks team that included a 16-year old lost to a far more experienced West Brom side.
Chris Brunt, Gareth Barry and Charlie Austin alone have played more than 1,600 games between them. Barry making his professional debut before seven of our lot were even born!
Bowyer gave debuts to 19-year old Abraham Odom and 16-year Aaron Henry, the third youngster player behind Jonjo Shelvey and Paul Konchesky to make their Addicks debut.
With Alfie Doughty and Ben Dempsey cup tied, loan returnees Toby Stevenson and Brendan Wiredu both started as did James Vennings and Josh Davison. Loan signing Andre Green was given his debut.
It may have been the start of a new era at The Valley with Matt Southall again present, but it was a muted Valley, three quarters empty. It’s a shame that the ground couldn’t be more rocking, but sadly that’s the joys of the FA Cup these days.
We weren’t embarrassed by any means, but we just have to shake this losing habit. 1-0, or 5-0 is still a defeat.
Oshilaja was probably our most accomplished performer but the biggest cheer was for Jonny Williams coming on for 20 minutes at the end. Tomer Hemed also got a run out.
Afterwards Bow said that Lyle Taylor will be out between 2-3 weeks, just fit in time to be sold 😉, and it looks hopefully if both Conor Gallagher and Josh Cullen will be staying for the duration, with the latter gratefully back in training tomorrow. How we have missed Cullen.

Bow: “At the end of the day we’ve lost the game. I don’t like losing any game but taking into account the lads that have started, their age, their experience, then I think we gave a good account of ourselves.”
