Luton Town 2 Charlton Athletic 1

This is a tough run, no win in six, and no clean sheets either, and our points total is stuck in the quicksand. The squad is decimated, and now Gallagher will miss Saturday after being booked. Josh Cullen will be out until after Christmas.

We have a bigger squad this season, two players for each position etc, but it is an infliction of Duchatelet’s ownership that once again too many of these players are brought in last minute, cheaply, not fit enough or have never been fit. Or all of the above.

Players will return, but losing relied upon players like Cullen is a killer. We were overloaded with midfielders at the end of August, we thought, and now it will be Pratley and his grandchildren on Saturday.

The defence needs to be better, a lot of goals conceded this season have seemingly been defendable, but with such a lightweight and inexperienced midfield the defence was bound to cave at some point tonight.

Possibly two refeering mistakes, and I hope Bow doesn’t become one of those managers, yet we did take the lead, Leko’s third in three, but this league is all fine margins, rarely are teams thrashed and although we again held our own, we badly need one of those fine margins on our side.

Tough times, with Bowyer sounding more and more pissed off. Time to stick together more than ever and back Bowyer and the boys, whoever he can get to play on Saturday.

Addicks at Kenilworth Road:
Bow: “We’re in a difficult situation at the moment. I believe that the 11 I had out there could have won the game today. We took the lead and, because of decisions, we lost the game.“
Elsewhere: A late goal from Leeds at Reading put them top. Fulham beat Derby 3-0, Cardiff beat Stoke who stay in the bottom three. Millwall and Wigan shared the points and Grant scored as Huddersfield drew at home to Swansea.

  1. Last night’s game made hard watching. Hard watching because if we’re honest, we didn’t really deserve anything despite Bowyer’s protestations about decisions (there is no way I wan’t VAR in The Championship btw). Hard watching because you can’t fault the players effort but they just look shot or not quite up to it yet.

I did wonder whether this injury list is coincidence or whether cutting corners on the investment in medical facilities/personnel/sports science (which we no doubt have to due to the shoe string the club is currently operating on) is having an impact here.

    • I think you hit the nail on the head tex77. I’ve heard that Bowyer is not best pleased with the quality of the med team and would like some influence to change it. I doubt there is a budget for that.

I think the main problem with our defence is that our full backs/ wing backs are squad players, on the right covering for the loss of Dijksteel and on the left for the injured Page. We have tried to make do but it hasn’t worked at Championship level. I think Pearce and Lockyer are good players and Sarr when in form is good cover. Pratley has looked good when we play 3 at the back. We would be in worse trouble if Phillips lost form.
In January we must sign 3 or 4 players for the team not just the squad especially if Taylor is sold.
The two players from Brighton have been a complete waste of time and Aneke and Oztumer seem to be injury prone. In the meantime Bowyer may need to rely on youngsters. Morgan Doughty and Davison could rise to the challenge. Dempsey and Stevenson should also come into consideration short term if their loan deals allow.
