I hadn’t gotten around to posting my final 2013 Top 5’s, so I am going to bombard you with the final ones in the next few minutes starting with the best places I got to see last year.

A very Merry Christmas to you all. We have had the Christmas songs album on in the car for at least the last 5 weeks and I now know how it feels to work in a shop over the Christmas period. Even so, there are some Christmas jingles that never fail to have me singing away to them, even though they are on repeat.
It got me thinking and I thought in the spirit of my 2013 Top 5’s that I would list my favourites, so here they are, my Top 5 Favourite Christmas songs. What are yours?
1. East 17 – Stay Another Day
This is the ultimate classic ballad that still has people of a certain age shouting out “East 17”, even though no one liked them at the time except for teenage school girls. The song is supposed to be written in memory of frontman Tony Mortimer’s brother who had committed suicide.
Next up in my 2013 Top 5’s is a look at the hotels I stayed in during the last year.
50 nights I spent in hotel rooms in 2013, some were functional, some were funky, some were a little flash but the following were my Top 5 Favourite Hotels:

The first of my seasonal Chicago Addick Top 5’s and I begin with those on my doorstep. Apparently looking at this list I do a lot of eating, which might explain my pre-festive girth. Hmmm. So off we go then with my Top 5 Favourite Bermuda Things over the last 12 months:

My final Top 5 of 2012 involves the Addicks. 2012 was an exceptional year to be a Charlton fan, and it’s been a number of long years since we can say that.
Five highlights was pretty impossible especially when mostly my matchday experience means stomping around the living room trying to follow the commentary on the radio or sneaking too frequent looks at my mobile for Twitter updates.
Nonetheless I picked five, each memorable to me for different reasons and here they are, My Top 5 Charlton Athletic Defining Moments from 2012:

Five more favourite things from 2012. The following five begin with two things anomalous to Bermuda – a decent café and a decent shop both with very good service. The third was my best loved local restaurant and finally two stunning reminders of paradise. Here are my Top 5 Bermuda Things from 2012:

Next up on the Chicago Addick Top 5 agenda are hotels. When I am old I’d like someone to just move me into one of the five I have listed below. I stayed in 25 hotels in 2012, some for pleasure, some because of necessity. Five stood out from all of the rest and here are my 5 Favourite Hotels:

Putting the mighty Addicks to one side for the moment, other than the League One title winners, 2012 was a sensational year for sport. There were many screaming at the telly, jumping up and down moments but here were my Top 5 Favourite Sporting Moments of 2012:

Back to the annual Chicago Addick Top Five and next up is restaurants. My five were all in the United States, but each one very distinguishable. Here were my Top Five Restaurants of 2012:

Annual Chicago Addick Top Five time, and I’ll start with my 5 Favourite Albums of the Year. I’ve downloaded to a whole range of albums this year, many exceptional listening and my short-list had plenty more than 5 on it. They were tough put in any order, but here it goes:

A year is a long time in football and it can also remind you that rarely do good things happen overnight. It wasn’t easy to pick just 5 Defining CAFC Moments, but here they are:
1. Chris Powell appointed as manager, January 14th
This is what I wrote on the day he was unveiled: “My heart aches with undying joy but also trepidation but I know more than anything else that Chris Powell’s heart has Charlton Athletic Football Club running through it like a stick of rock. Welcome home Chris. Make us proud again.”

Strangely enough I’ve never gotten into Bermudian music, so my iPod is never far away wherever I am. I seek my recommendations from a lot of places so please feel free. It wasn’t a great year for bands’ albums in my mind, but these were my top five:
1. Smother by Wild Beasts
I hadn’t listened to their earlier stuff before I got a heads up on this album and I’m glad I did. This is a smoldering, slinky analogue of tunes and it takes the crown as my favourite from last year.
Favourite track – Loop the Loop

One day I am going to stay in a hotel and not leave it. Just move in. For real. One of my few fanciful splurges is on hotels and these were my favourite five from last year.
1. St Regis, Atlanta
Buckhead in Atlanta has a ridiculous amount of quality hotels, but this one would not look out of place in Paris. The majestic hotel has a southern charm with Roman accents like it’s pool piazza (photo)

The next installment in my Top 5 collection from 2011. There was plenty of nominations, but here are my Top Five Restaurants of 2011:
1. Joe Fortes, Vancouver
An atmospheric seafood and chop house in Vancouver. I remember the night more than the food, but it was a great night mostly because of Joe Fortes. Tip-top service, sensational and flavourful food.

Ok, time for a bit of naval gazing. It’s January and therefore it is time for some Chicago Addick Top 5’s. I’ll start of with some of the places I found myself in in 2011.
1. Aspen
We were in Aspen in April and it has a certain finesse and poise to it. The once gold rush town in Colorado is a year round resort but to not go in the winter to see the majestic snow capped mountains would be a bucket list tick missed. My Travelogue

Favourite places can be anything but these are all places that meant something to me last year whether visited once or often.
My Top Five Favourite Places in 2010:
1. Vermont
Serene countryside, dramatic mountains, see-through streams, tiny towns with church steeples and clapboard house, and lots of small farms keeping such secrets as wine, cheese, maple syrup and apples.

I love hotels. If I could have someone to pack and unpack me then I would actually just live in them, moving every few weeks when I wanted a change of view. My current job means I don’t travel anywhere near as much as I used to, but I could still pick 5 hotels that I loved in 2010.
My Top Five Favourite Hotels in 2010
1. Rosewood Mayakoba, Riviera Maya, Mexico
I have bored you many times about how much I love the Rosewood Hotels group. This one between Cancun and Tulum is built around miles of emerald coloured lagoon waters. The hotel could not be faulted from the tequila lounge to it’s sunken hot tub in your very own garden.

I love good food and good restaurants and we are horribly starved (sorry) of really good ones here in Bermuda. Still I am lucky and managed to eat in some great places last year. It was hard to pick five but I did.
My Five Favourite Restaurants of 2010
1. Purple Pig, Chicago
Cheese, wine and swine. A brilliantly conceived space, unusual tapas style menu, beguiling wine list and big range of unusual beers. The creation of Mario Batali prodigy Jimmy Bannos Jr, who gave my friends and I an unforgettable food experience in September.

Not a great year for albums I don’t think but I still easily managed to find five favourites, three from bands making their debuts.
My Top Five Albums in 2010:
1. Total Life Forever – Foals
Brilliant follow up the their first album but bravely different. If Antidotes was angry, then this is composed and unruffled. Full of deep and meaningful tracks with songs that get you right inside.
Favourite track: Spanish Sahara

Yes it’s that time again for a bit of personal indulgence but I’ll start of with a Charlton one, if you promise to read the rest during the next week!
The Top 5 Defining CAFC Moments in 2010
1. Phil Parkinson, Tim Breacker and Mark Kinsella getting the sack
It didn’t happen in 2010, but it has got us Addicks in a right titter, so I can’t ignore it. A solid decent bloke, but Parky had burnt his chances and we deserve better. Now we have to wait to see if the new owners deliver us someone better.
