2012 Top 5 Favourite Albums

Annual Chicago Addick Top Five time, and I’ll start with my 5 Favourite Albums of the Year. I’ve downloaded to a whole range of albums this year, many exceptional listening and my short-list had plenty more than 5 on it. They were tough put in any order, but here it goes:

1. Lana Del Rey – Born to Die
It was close but Lana just wins my favourite album of the year. Lana’s angelic voice takes you on a roller-coaster of twists, turns, highs and lows with it’s labyrinthine of lyrics. A wonderful pop album.
Favourite track: Off to the Races

2. The Maccabees – Given to the Wild
I came a bit late to this South London band, but this is a beautifully cohesive album with some absolute cracking tunes. Wistful and eerie that sends shivers down the spine.
Favourite track: Child

3. Two Door Cinema Club – Beacon
Tourist History was a tough act to follow. Not as instantly catchy, Beacon however is a grower with some fine instrumentals alongside the unmistakable stony voice of Alex Trimble.
Favourite Track: Spring

4. The XX – Coexist
Tough to usurp their first album, and this one might not do that, but it certainly stands up alongside it. The sound is cavernous and captivating and there is a unique mixture of lyrics and music which is a potent mix.
Favourite track: Fiction

5. Bloc Party – Four
It’s been a couple of years since Intimacy and the break has done them good as Four returns them to the spark and assertiveness of Silent Alarm with Kele’s distinctive voice at the heart of it.
Favourite track: Day Four

Notable mention: The Rialto Burns – Learning to Fight.
