2013 Top 5 Favourite Christmas songs

A very Merry Christmas to you all. We have had the Christmas songs album on in the car for at least the last 5 weeks and I now know how it feels to work in a shop over the Christmas period. Even so, there are some Christmas jingles that never fail to have me singing away to them, even though they are on repeat.

It got me thinking and I thought in the spirit of my 2013 Top 5’s that I would list my favourites, so here they are, my Top 5 Favourite Christmas songs. What are yours?

1. East 17 – Stay Another Day
This is the ultimate classic ballad that still has people of a certain age shouting out “East 17”, even though no one liked them at the time except for teenage school girls. The song is supposed to be written in memory of frontman Tony Mortimer’s brother who had committed suicide.

2. Frankie Goes to Hollywood – The Power of Love
Another ballad, but more like a hymn and Holly Johnson’s voice sends shivers down my spine every time it begins. Band Aid knocked it off the number 1 spot in 1994. How dare they.

3. Andrea Bocelli with Katherine Jenkins – I Believe
This simply reminds me of my daughter. From her first Christmas at just a few months old carrying her around her bedroom trying to get her to sleep to now 4 years later singing along to it together. A beautiful song.

4. Slade – Merry Christmas Everybody
1973 and the first record I ever bought and an absolute must for any Christmas party and it still net’s Noddy and his mates hundreds of thousands of pounds every Christmas. Good for them.

5. Chris Rea – Driving home for Christmas
Likewise East 17, I don’t think I have ever considered buying or downloading any other Chris Rea tracks, but this reminds me of travelling to see family and friends and it has remained a classic despite only making it to number 53 in the charts when it was first released in 1988.

Honourable mentions: Fairytale Of New York – The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl and Happy Christmas (War Is Over) – John Lennon/Yoko Ono
