2012 Top 5 CAFC Defining Moments

My final Top 5 of 2012 involves the Addicks. 2012 was an exceptional year to be a Charlton fan, and it’s been a number of long years since we can say that.

Five highlights was pretty impossible especially when mostly my matchday experience means stomping around the living room trying to follow the commentary on the radio or sneaking too frequent looks at my mobile for Twitter updates.

Nonetheless I picked five, each memorable to me for different reasons and here they are, My Top 5 Charlton Athletic Defining Moments from 2012:

1. Carlisle United away, April 14th
I am not embarrassed to say that I had tears in my eyes the afternoon that we won at Carlisle for a momentous 3rd promotion win and when Sheffield Wednesday failed to win at Colchester our return to The Championship was complete.

2. Hartlepool United home, May 6th
What a momentous day at The Valley that was. These kind of days don’t come along very often and how we milked it! And gloriously unlike under Curbs in 2000, Powelly’s boys added the cream to the cake with a final victory that gave us 101 points for the season.

3. Wycombe Wanderers home, April 21st
The day we became Champions. Whilst the week before after the Carlisle match I celebrated pretty much on my lonesome at home (although my other-half did say she was pleased for me), the weekend of the Wycombe game I partied like it was 1998 along with my brother and fellow Addicks including the groom on his stag in Barcelona

4. Bournemouth away, March 3rd
I was at this away win that had far more fortune than flair, but that last minute winner from Yann Kermorgant had the big Charlton contingent on the south coast in raptures and it also had even the most pessimistic fan believing that this was our year.

5. Bristol City away, November 11th
I don’t know, I still find myself looking down the table and not upwards but this terrific away performance and result I think proved to a lot of Addicks that this team could hack it in this division. City certainly now have relegation problems and we put them away comfortably that afternoon with goals from Haynes and Morrison.

Hartlepool May 6th. A special word for the hundreds of Smurfs too. They contributed significantly towards a good day.
