TC’s 2 year contract

We have been told the length of Tyreece Campbell’s new contract.

“The 20-year-old winger, who joined the Addicks at U9 level, has signed a two-year deal, with a club option of an additional year.” (more)

Scraps of positivity in lost season

I’m not normally one to dwell on season’s past, especially crap ones, but I had ten minutes and was toying with some thoughts around if there was actually anything positive to say at all about the last nine months.

We began the season being fed the tag line of ‘new team, new era’ which coupled with Andy Scott pushing the mantra of ‘action not words’ told us in hindsight all we needed to know of what a cycle of incompetence we were to expect.

A quiet day

Not in my house as I have a woman arriving in a minute who is going to power wash my roof. Just hope she doesn’t want me to help.

A quiet day at Sparrows Lane though, which is what can happen when you have no manager. Players understand that manager’s come and go, and whether it be a Technical Director or a Head of Recruitment that is often the main driver in deals, footballers, and people like you and me, like to know who they are working for.

Exactly what it said on the tin

Some words from the self-appointed senior management team tonight. Zero unaccountability in there and zero signs of planning for failure, which Scott, Methven and Rodwell must becoming accustomed too.

Yet, they will still take their pay as the bloated management team work out what to do next, no doubt leaving it to Andy Scott to bring the promises and the affirming words.

Curtis Fleming to be interim with Pearcey assisting

10 days, and 7 goals conceded after joining the club to assist Michael Appleton especially on the defensive side, Curtis Fleming has been put in interim charge of the first-team.

Fleming will be assisted by current Senior Professional Development Phase Lead Coach Jason Pearce.

Richard O’Donnell has also gone, who Appleton added to his team as first team coach in mid-September.

Charlton Athletic 2 Northampton Town 3

Tonight Charlton are looking for their 17th permanent manager in less than 18 years after Alan Curbishley gracefully left his post.

Michael Appleton’s final game was anything but graceful and in a bear pit of an atmosphere he was fired straight after the game following another injury time defeat, this time to Northampton Town who scored their winner in the 97th minute.

Appleton’s press conference

Michael Appleton’s press conference was a tough watch yesterday. It made for uncomfortable viewing as he was grilled for the majority of the 18 minutes about his future hardly touching on the game tonight and spoke more about Northampton’s threat’s than any of our own.

To be fair to him he remained relatively calm and spoke honestly and candidly and did not shy away from the position he has put us in.

Decision time

Plenty of rumours circulating today that Michael Appleton had been relieved of his head coach duties in SE7, yet Louis Mendez hunted out a denial from the club this evening, and he is expected to carry out a pre-game press conference tomorrow.

More than anyone Andy Scott, Jim Rodwell and Charlie Methven (he is much more involved than the club would like us think) are praying for their handpicked head coach to pick up a win and stem a horrendous run of form and results that is propelling us into a relegation dog-fight.

Burton Albion 2 Charlton Athletic 0

Five defeats in six. Nine without a win in the league, eleven in all competitions. Last win was the very fortunate one over Cheltenham at The Valley. Before that it was away at Wigan in October.

As a reminder we are in League One playing in front of crowds of 3,000.

M I C K E Y

No, not the new Michael Appleton chant, but I’m in Orlando this week so I refer to that other well known cartoon character Michael Mouse.

Orlando is a two-hour drive from Sarasota and I’m going to leave shortly for my companies annual Symposium and a whirlwind of non-stop half hour meetings, break-out sessions, key note speakers, panel discussions, lots of coffee, buffet lunches, dull dinners and late, late night’s in the bar.

Reading too much into Fleming hire

It’s a natural inclination of mine, but I’m always looking for an angle so I have been thinking about what the hire of new assistant head coach Curtis Fleming means.

Assistant head coach makes Fleming Michael Appleton’s number two inserting himself above Appleton’s old mate Richard O’Donnell in the club’s coaching hierarchy. O’Donnell is listed as coach and Stephen Henderson is first team goalkeeping coach.

Tonight’s online meeting

Well it was less of a meeting and more of a staging. The video can be seen here if you weren’t able to tune in.

In my work career I have sat in a million of these ‘interactive’ meetings where the message is carefully delivered, granting some past mistakes but painting a rosy picture of our future, all the while making sure they shoehorn in the DE&I guy as well.

Leyton Orient 1 Charlton Athletic 0

Indefensible that. Another display devoid of idea, organization, threat or care.

And afterwards again Michael Appleton passed blame onto the players. I suspect keeping telling them that they are not good enough and need to be replaced or kicked out in January is taking its toll.

Charlton Athletic 2 Cambridge United 2

I’ll lay that one at the door of Michael Appleton.

To start with it was an odd line-up where he persisted with Fraser, isolated our biggest threat in May and started Rylah, only just 18, when he clearly wasn’t ready.

Transfer window promises

Although it wasn’t surprising to see us lose last night and exit the final cup competition of our season, it was a surprise that Michael Appleton refused to include Chem Campbell and James Abankwah in the matchday squad. There was also no place for Charlie Kirk, who clearly has played his last game in a Charlton shirt.

Micah Mbick signs pro deal

I think other than the moist studious of Charlton’ academy, no one would have heard of Micah Mbick until about 3 weeks ago.

Micah Mbick was given his debut by Michael Appleton, who Micah had obviously impressed. He then almost instantly scored after coming on as sub away in the FA Cup replay at Cray Valley. Today Mbick penned his first pro contract.

Cycle of mediocrity

I have thought a lot today about last night. I know we won, but I don’t think I have ever been as non-plussed.

All the stats, the apathy of the attendances and the mixed bagatelle of players, still disjointed due to umpteen poor transfer windows all point to another season of mediocrity.

Two up top

October is a big month. Despite the Derby game being postponed, there are still six league games, of which somehow five at home and 18 points are at stake.

After Wigan on the last day of the month we should have a good sense of what the season will entail, and also what Michael Appleton is made off.

Stevenage 1 Charlton Athletic 1

A solid platform to build on. Yet, at half time that platform was anything but solid as nothing had appeared to change from Dean Holden’s time to Michael Appleton’s.

The 2nd half was a lot better, it needed to be, but particularly the final 25 minutes plus a long added time where we were the stronger finishers.

Richard O’Donnell joins Appleton as first team coach

Appleton of my eye

Michael Appleton showed all the unruffled experience of someone that has managed over 420 games in his press conference today. There were a range of journo’s firing questions at the new Charlton head coach and I thought he handled it well.

Appleton said we have to hit the ground running, but Saturday brings a tough initiation with them top of L1 and with a renowned robust playing style representative of the bloke on the sidelines, and they don’t lose much at Broadhall Way either.

The attention turns to

Andy Scott.

Michael Appleton gets a wide berth from me. Appleton will stand in the Charlton dug out from Saturday and therefore gets my support. What betterments and regeneration the next coming from Salford can achieve with the squad he has been given is talk for another day.

Michael Appleton appointed

Apologies for not posting sooner. This has taken me a little while, and also a lot of Peroni to get to the conclusion that I am not particularly bothered about our next manager head coach.

Michael Appleton, a much ridiculed individual on Charlton Life, has been chosen as the next man to attempt to turn around this sinking titanic of a football club we support.
