Charlton Athletic 2 Cheltenham Town 1
My, that was turgid stuff. But, a win is a win although there wasn’t much to encourage a race into the play-off’s despite Michael Appleton missive that it was his “most satisfying victory I’ve had since I’ve been here.”
Easily pleased I guess.
We were poor all over the pitch. Passive, slow, distracted even. The midfield was particularly bad. McGrandles and Fraser watched the game go by, and Dobbo just looked like he was trying too hard.
Cheltenham deserved their lead. A fine cross was headed in by a player watched by two Charlton defenders. Fortunately we equalised quickly thanks to a sloppy tackle just inside the angle of the box and byline by a Town player on Leaburn.
Incidentally Miles Leaburn was taken off later in the 1st half with what looked like a hamstring injury. His play was a rare plus up to that point.
Alfie May often looking forlorn against his old team playing out wide smashed home the penalty. After that was nothing but satisfying until the final minutes of the half when we upped the ante and Tedic, Watson (T) and Blackett Taylor all went close. The latter hit the post after a trademark burst into the box.
I’d have hoped we carry that degree of commitment into the 2nd half, but it was the team bottom of the league that took the game to us, and credit to a very low Valley crowd sticking with it on what looked like a very cold evening.
Tedic fired over in front of goal, but other than that I don’t remember a worthwhile chance.
Then in the final minutes Campbell (T) got to the byline and hit a cross that fortunately hit a Cheltenham player’s hand and the assistant referee gave us another penalty.
From 12 yards May smacked it as hard as he could, the net rippled and he forgot that he said he wasn’t going to celebrate against his old team.
3 points it is, but despite Appleton’s proclamation it was a rubbish performance that has mid table mediocrity running through it like a stick of rock.
MoM: Had to be Alfie
Appleton of my eye: I’ll tell you what would be satisfying…. a decent bloody set piece, Michael!
Elsewhere: Oxford and Bolton was goalless, Pompey won away at Burton 2-0 and Peterborough came from 2-down to draw 2-2 at Stevenage. Northampton had a good win at Blackpool, but the win of the night was Reading’s 5-1 demolition of Carlisle. Sam Lavelle was on the scoresheet again…. at the wrong end!

Without Alfie May’s contribution, we would be nearer to relegation than play-offs. If he gets injured, it’s season over.
Currently Aneke injured (as usual) Leaburn now injured (and looking like he doesn’t want to be here)
Tedic, decidedly average.
Then we’re down to the kids !!!!
Also we have a midfield that can’t score Goals. But agree Miles is adding no value at present – sadly
We found a way to win…
I can see the point of a central midfield of Dobbo, McGrandles and Fraser in away games where you need a bit of midfield grit to break up play and dominate the match but at home it was a bit too negative and one-paced for my liking, especially against a team in the relegation zone. It pushed Dobson a bit deeper than I’d have liked and May and CBT on the wings didn’t link with their full-backs often enough when we were defending. That’s not what we signed May to do anyway. Everything was too slow and disjointed. We haven’t come back from the international break roaring.
Now we look to have lost Miles Leaburn for a few games so needed Bodan Tedic to turn up and he should have had a goal in the second half plus he had two decent chances before the break. We should recall Daniel Kanu as Chuks is also out – and it annoyed me that he’s out on loan while we had the younger and callower Micah Mbick on the bench. Hopefully Kanu returns and we give one or both of Patrick Casey and Mbick some game time v Gillingham. Casey has scored 8 goals in the last week for the Academy teams including all five on Monday against Cardiff’s U-21s, lets see what he can do at senior level.
the only grit in that starting midfield is Dobbo
no wonder he looks tired he did the work of 3 until the lightweight and inept were replaced
Louie Watson’s place in the pecking order is beyond baffling
Lets face it another season over before December. There will be no “investment” in January as I really dont see owner(s) dipping into their pockets just for mid table mediocrity. I would sell Leaburn (although possibly unlikely now injured) Dobson and CBT if silly offers forthcoming. CBT body language suggests he has downed tools and will leave on a free anyway in the Summer so get something for him now.
Then a complete rebuild in the Summer as we are going nowhere with the present team.
Yep CA it was a cold night with a game that did not inspire hope for a promotion push.
Appleton can’t be serious with his post match comments , can he ???
We should be dominating teams under us and once again we struggled with Cheltenham who had a game plan that caused us issues.
Alfie dispatched his two pens but boy oh boy did we struggle for long periods of the game.
We face Gillingham on Saturday another banana skin game.
