Stevenage 1 Charlton Athletic 1

A solid platform to build on. Yet, at half time that platform was anything but solid as nothing had appeared to change from Dean Holden’s time to Michael Appleton’s.

The 2nd half was a lot better, it needed to be, but particularly the final 25 minutes plus a long added time where we were the stronger finishers.

Mostly that had to do with Chuks, who was a surprise inclusion on the bench, and when he came on with 76 minutes on the clock he was all raw action as he has always been when fit.

In fact all of the subs, six of them in the end, played their part in a far more dynamic latter game display.

In true Charlton comedic value with Miles Leaburn starting and Aneke on the bench, Alfie May was then missing due to suffering a midweek training concussion. You have to laugh. Nathan Asiimwe was also out with a “minor quad injury.” That’s 6 months then….

It was good to have Miles back, but I have to think he is better in a front two, and not a three, and one of Appleton’s tasks will be to mould this squad which is very unbalanced positional-wise, but showed today that there are options, into a formation that best suits our most impactful players.

Another immediate job for Appleton now he has seen 17 of them in a game situation is to sort the bloody defence out. They were all over the shop again and there were so many things wrong with the goal we conceded it took Brownie and Curbs the entire half-time break to dissect it.

I’m not fond of the keeper. I said last week that Harry Isted has yet to make a save, and not in a commendable way, and today he literally jumped over the ball when Stevenage’s Reid scored.

We could easily have conceded twice in the 2nd half as Stevenage players had free reign on goal following more indecisiveness at our back.

I can’t not mention the referee. He, and his linesmen were dreadful. Two, maybe three, penalties were stonewall. The referee couldn’t be any closer to watch Anderson be taken out at the shin, and in the 2nd half we won a corner only because their player punched the ball out. The linesmen just yards away.

In fact our penalty was slightly fortuitous, but 1,400 Addicks and George Dobson forced the decision on the ref, who I have to say Steve Evans side had worked very well. Something we are never cute enough to do.

CBT taking the ball for the penalty made my heart beat a lot faster, but he finished it beautifully.

A platform then, our first point on the road, and against this morning’s table-toppers and Steve Evans, who we have a poor record against.

Interestingly Appleton said after that the club’s sports scientists commented that he had upped the intensity on the training ground, and they as a whole did look fitter.

One final thing that was glaringly obvious is that there are just too many young players starting. For all of their individual talent, they don’t have the physicality, the judgement or the nous to carry the team at this cutthroat level.

MoM: Dobbo was good as were the subs, but I’m going to give it to Aneke.

Appleton of my eye: He said he learnt within 10 minutes what he did wrong, what he can and will do better. An honest assessment from the new boss, who managed to turn it around during the break.

Elsewhere: The top four are Exeter, Port Vale, Oxford and Stevenage. The Grecians beat Cheltenham 1-0, Vale beat Northampton by the same score and Oxford won away at Fleetwood, where Lee Johnson did not get off to a good start.

Solid platform maybe but not a single shot on target asides the pen.
If your man is to stand a chance, he desperately needs some experience and nous in midfield to protect the ‘defence’ so hopefully Fraser and Camera can lace up soon.
Let’s not blame the officials too much, our back four were more than guilty as well and lucky to get away with gifting that late 1on1. Thought Hector was supposed to have been one of the (re)signings of the summer🤔

True Steve. I was thinking more the rolled up sleeves in the final part of the game as opposed to any real quality. CBT scored of course, but was pretty thwarted as was Leaburn and TC looked a little lost. Chem did okay in bits I thought. A lot more improvement required.

As for Hector, he has been awful hasn’t he.

A point on the road is generally what you need as long as you hoover up the wins at home. We won last time and got a point this making four over the last two games. Keep that up please…

The match itself was a game of two halves – the first I thought we looked unsure that what we were doing was what we were meant to be doing. Then came the soft goal….to be fair some good interplay on the edge of our box and a decent finish, but it was just a bit too easy.

Second half – attacking our fans we looked stronger and a bit more determined and overall the draw was a fair result. But we didn’t really create any chances that weren’t penalty shouts. That’s what concerns me – Miles Leaburn grafted away but needed a striker alongside him. He was a bit too easy to isolate.

We have all the pieces – it’s going to be down to Appleton to try and put them in the right order. With Panutche Camara and Fraser to return from injury we will be stronger in the centre of the park.

Thought we finished well and all the loans & subs look promising. Hector was looking a bit more like last season. Leaburn can’t play as a single target man yet, he doesn’t have the skill to control/cushion the ball. Isted picked him out time after time but we always lost possession. Needs to be practiced. BUT the main thing is the officials. I know the standard in L1 is not good but they were staggeringly bad yesterday. Like the rest of us 1400 I was incandescently furious at some of the decisions. They ruin the game and lead to bad feeling in the crowd with potential issues after the game (credit to the police taking sensible and rapid action to deal with a scuffle that I saw). My teenage son was hoarse from singing you’re not fit to referee and other words that I hope he didn’t learn from me…. Does whoever look after the officials simply ignore any feedback? Don’t the refs watch the game back to analyse and improve their own performance?

Well I’m not over impressed with our performance but a draw is progress. All that’s needed is to look at the following areas.
1….sort our defence out as its a shambles at present.
2…make a definate decision about the many choices available and build the strongest first choice players.
3…get rid of the black kit !
    4…maintain the level of fitness
5..establish a rapor with the fans immediately.
    6..club to purchase a lucky black 🐈‍⬛

What the club need is a proven goalscorer, lyle Taylor springs to mind, with two six foot defenders to go up on the attack for corners etc.
