No Welling friendly

A tradition that goes back to 1987 will end this summer as Charlton have decided not to play Welling in a friendly.

The season opener began after Welling agreed to host our reserves when we were playing at Selhurst Park, and in practically all of the seasons since the club have taken a full team to Park View Road in pre-season.

Blue is the colour

Or scuba or marine, but it will be shades of blue for Charlton’s third kit next season. Chuks is modeling it in the photo.

The club are doing a slow reveal of the new Hummel kits for next season. Later yesterday the home and away goalkeeper kits also got an airing, and I have to say I really like the home yellow and white honeycomb one.

Bottom of the barrel

Today was the traditional pre-season run out at Welling. Nicky Ajose and Lyle Taylor got the goals in a 2-1 win. A crowd of just 1,020, the lowest ever, witnessed it.

Two different sides played each half and included trialists Simon Dawkins and central defender Elliot Ward. Dawkins is an attacking midfielder, aged 30 and has been playing out in the U.S. for San Jose Earthquakes. Before that he did well at Derby. 33-year old Ward has had a string of clubs and was most recently on loan at MK Dons. Blackburn released him after last season. Bowyer said he will make quick decisions on the two, but in my mind these two are typical of the summer-bottom-of-the-barrel signings we have seen under Duchatelet.

Welling friendly changed. Again

Apparently according to the Welling United website. Back to it’s original date, which means one of three things:

1) Lee Bowyer now needs less time to get his players ready,
2) Roland Duchatelet has now agreed to pay for a pre-season tour camping in Swanage, or
3) The management of the club don’t know their arse from their elbow.

New kit w*nker

I don’t actually mind the new kit. Traditional, low on frills, the proper colour red. The new sponsor is a bit of a talking point. Yes, a load of clubs have gambling companies sponsoring them but its not very community centric Charlton is it? That’s my only gripe, that it is just another layer of what Charlton has always been all about that the owners have peeled off and thrown away. Our history, our culture. Discarded like a Belgium chocolate wrapper.

I like the kit, it’s obviously straight out of the Nike catalogue, but I won’t be buying it as I bought one of these instead. Over 800 protest shirts the organisers have sold, and hats off to them. Terrific effort.

Welling already?

A whole week in Blighty and not even a sniff of a new Addicks signing to shout from the roof tops.

From behind the curtain it looks as if Guy Luzon is attempting to manage his budget and his transfer targets within the restrictions imposed on him, and the sale of Standard Liege has not only corked the flow of Belgium imports but actually obstructed them.

Frederic Bulot has been allowed to train and actually play in pre-season friendlies for Charlton but it is thought that Standard are playing hardball in the transfer negotiations, and to add to the obstacles, French club Reims have now joined the fray for the French speaking midfielder.
