Addicks and World Cup play-off’s

It wasn’t a surprise that Lyndon Dykes was called up this week for the Scotland squad, who play friendlies against Japan at Hampden Park on Saturday and then take on fellow World Cup qualifiers Ivory Coast at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium next Tuesday.

What wasn’t a surprise was the lack of a call up for Conor Coventry from Ireland and Lloyd Jones from Craig Bellamy of Wales as those two nations enter a huge week in the World Cup play-offs.

Jones’ presser

The Thursday weekly pre-match Nathan Jones club presser follows a similar format each week. It is obviously heavily managed and at best we get a look back at how well last week’s oppositon were coached, how well this coming week’s team are coached, and injury news consisting of updates that players are a week less injured than they were last Thursday.

However, Rich Cawley asks the questions that we want answers to.

Who doesn’t love a last minute winner.

Euphoric scenes again at The Valley tonight as Sonny Carey scored the winning goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time to make it 23 points from 14 games. We sit 5th in the table as we go to bed tonight.

7 points in a week that ended with a long schlep up the east coast is a terrific return and today once again the Addicks did just not know when to give it up.

A late Luke Berry goal from a copybook James Bree corner gave us a deserved point.

Talking Point 🗣️

We all know it was only the first game, and there are 45 to play, but I’m still wallowing a little bit from Saturday’s win over Watford. Back to earth tomorrow though when we host Stevenage in the Carabao Cup, and whilst we hadn’t played Watford since 2015, this is our 7th meeting with Stevenage in less than three years.

Exhausted, but the best kind of 🔴⚪️

I learnt a long time ago that these kind of days do not come along very often, and when they do you have to soak it in, cement it into your memory. Soak it in, Addicks.

This team.

Talk about giving us something to get behind. That was a virtuoso performance producing a magnificent result this afternoon.

Was that as nervy as it seemed to me?

It might not have been, but Crawley presented a real banana skin tonight and we dealt with the pressure and delivered. Three more points and a clean sheet win on the road.

Lloyd Jones signs new contract

Announced minutes before kick off tonight. Jones has put pen to paper on an extension that takes him to the summer of 2027. Very positive news is that.

The vice-captain said: “I’m buzzing to sign this contract and I’m looking forward to what the future holds. I’ve loved my time at Charlton so far and I feel like I’ve found a real home here and am playing the best football of my career under the gaffer.”

A dismal game that could have been ruined by the weather, but watching Charlton it is hard to tell these days.

It was better than Tuesday, but that is a very low bar, although reverting to a back three and two wing backs meant at least we couldn’t just pump it long, and they did try to pass it.

That was awful. More awful actually watching them in the flesh than on CATV, at least then I can do something else more interesting like sort my socks into pairs.

It’s not so much losing, but it was the feeling of nothing. Nothing to cheer, nothing to get excited about, nothing to get you off your feet.

Charlton Athletic 2 Bolton Wanderers 0

Bolton have had our number for a couple of seasons now, especially at The Valley, but that number today was zero, as we kept another clean sheet and collected our third win.

Very early days, but what an uplifting beginning to the league season for Nathan Jones and his side.

Lloyd Jones’ injection

The conspiracy theorists, and I live in America and have got to meet a fair few, would say that Lloyd Jones’ apparent kidnapping after having an injection almost a month ago might be more to do with his new boss finding out about this.

Lloyd Jones signs from Cambridge

Another signing in the door tonight. 27 year old 6ft 3 central defender Lloyd Jones has signed a 2-year deal after his current contract with Cambridge United expired today.

That really should be it from a central defence point of view with Hector, Ness, Thomas, Jones, Mitchell and Elerewe all competing for a first team place. It is expected that Sam Lavelle will move on.
