Wycombe Wanderers 0 Charlton Athletic 4
This team.
Talk about giving us something to get behind. That was a virtuoso performance producing a magnificent result this afternoon.
Wycombe came into the game with their tails up, but after a frenetic opening we struck first, and then took complete control of the game in all aspects.
Defensively we were faultless, the press in it’s timing and execution was a joy, and we were relentless going forward especially in the second period when Jones wouldn’t allow them to take the foot of the pedal.
Lloyd Jones confidently dispatched the opener on 11 minutes after a fine bit of wing play from Docherty. Luke Berry then scored a gem of a second smashing home from outside of the box following a Jones header across goal from a fine Small cross that was only half cleared.
The half had gone better than any of us could’ve imagined, and our only moment of nervousness was when Gillesphey chested out for a corner right on the half-time whistle.
Ahead at the half, but plenty more to do in the next. However, we navigated the first ten minutes expertly squashing any attacking intentions Wycombe may have had and then on 59 minutes a goalkeeping error caused by the tireless Godden gave us a three-goal cushion.
The Addicks behind the goal were in heaven, a bloody noisy heaven at that, but there was more to come.
Small was becoming a real threat down the right and a perfect cross found Anderson in the box who thumped home a header to make it four. Heaven was now red and white.
The only blemish, hoping that Berry was just taken off as a precaution, was the sending off of Aneke. I was fuming at first without actually being able to see the incident on camera. Chuks could barge into a lamp post in the street he gets so testy, but upon closer look it appears that it was no more than a chest bump which the Wycombe player made a real meal off. Hopefully the club can get the red overturned as that is an instant three-match ban.
Still, it was a spectacular win and an outstanding team performance making it impossible to pick one player over another, so I’ll give them all a little mention.
Mannion was a calming influence throughout and made a great save late on from Wycombe’s one shot on target. Lloyd’s Jones was a colossus, and it’s worth remembering that he was booked in the 2nd minute. Gillesphey and Ramsey made it a triumvirate of, running out of adjunct’s here, but I’ll go with massive displays.
Coventry was typically industrious, but I thought Docherty had a cracking game. Berry and Anderson were interchangeable, and it was great to see the latter score.
It wasn’t the most influential of games from TC, but he played his part and Small became more dangerous as the game went on and became more stretched. Edwards has some sort of engine doesn’t he?
Finally Godden. He covers some serious ground and is expert at sniffing out the remotest possibility of a goalscoring opportunity.
Momentum.
🎙️“At half-time we said ‘what sort of a team do we want to be? Do we want to be a team that defends a two-goal lead and makes it edgy or do we just go after the game?’. We went after the game.” – Nathan Jones

That was a statement win – a six pointer that would have put the home side clear in second place had they won and al but nailed on for automatic promotion. Instead it was us who looked like we were chasing that second spot. Richard Kone, with 18 league goals, was nominated earlier in the week for both league player of the season and young player of the season and is apparently worth several million quid yet he was bossed out of the game and barely had a touch.
That was a very physical game of football but we outthought, outplayed and outmuscled Wycombe. Who knows how the season will unfold from here but I’m just pleased right now to see a bunch of players grafting for each other and the club.
NJ said after the match that Luke Berry had cramp, if so he should be ok and he was spotted on the subs bench late in the game without any strapping so that maybe be true. Hopefully Chuk’s red card will be overturned, the angle I saw on the highlights suggested a collision and Wycombe player coming off worst, but you never know with the refereeing authorities they tend to go a bit letter of the law in these cases.
With a house full of family it was difficult to keep up with the action from Wycombe.
Every time I checked we were another goal ahead. An absolutely astounding result and performance. I didn’t see that coming and I doubt anyone else did.
What a crazy season this has been (so far) From a team in the botton half and struggling, to a team guaranteed a Play-off place and still in with a slim chance of second.
I’ve been honest on here and have publicly said I couldn’t see us getting anything at Wycombe or Wrexham. I daren’t be positive about next Saturday in case I scupper it 🙂
If we do not make second and have to take part in the Play-offs, the other teams looking at us will be very wary, particularly Wycombe.
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant in all respects and departments. Four goals and a clean sheet away from home against a top team. Can we dare to hope for the same again against Wrexham. One thing is for sure, none of the play-off contenders will be wanting to be paired with us over two legs after that result. Everything crossed we can keep up that momentum
What a performance and a well deserved result…credit to Jones and coaching staff who had the players on task all game. Our fans made a positive contribution to the game and our last league fixture and play off games will see the Valley rocking again….
I have everything crossed that our run in will be successful and we do it….
Next up Wrexham and Parky must be worried !!!
