Crewe football special

Crewe Alexandra away actually would have been a decent trip for Addicks on opening day. An hour and a half from Euston, Gresty Road five minutes around the corner from the station, a pint in the Cheshire Inn on the way to the ground. Ugh, normal times — please come back!

21 years since we played at Gresty Road, 60 years since we were at Lincoln City, our second away trip. The more familiar names of Doncaster Rovers and Sunderland, the Addicks’ first two home games. Sunderland possibly our biggest home crowd of the season might be the game used as a trial to let fans return post Covid, although that was slated as September and we have just one home League game in that month.

October looks a minefield. Ipswich away follows Sunderland, then Wigan at The Valley, a midweek visit to Blackpool (that fixture is always midweek), then to Northampton before wrapping up the month at home to Oxford and away at Pompey.

Add in a stupid EFL Trophy game and that’s 8 games in October. Excited yet?

One last thing. Whatever happened to derby games over festive periods? Plymouth at home on Boxing Day. Really? Hull City away the day after New Year’s, Donny away on Good Friday and then Lincoln made to come to The Valley on Easter Monday.

You’d think with finances the way they are, football club’s and supporter’s, that the EFL may have paired local teams over the holiday season.

Not fit for purpose are they.

It will be interesting to see if any of the U23s who have not appeared in the 1st. team so far are involved in the game against Birmingham. Cafc usually play different sides each half of pre-season games and also include trialists. That may not be possible tomorrow. It will be interesting to see in the next couple of weeks whether we will be able to recruit some loan players it may be difficult to find suitable candidates in the present circumstances. Roll on the TAKEOVER!!!

  3. rierti – In your opinion knowing the squad number shortfall, who would you promote to the 1st team squad? U23’s that could blossom in L1.

Although many of the U23 squad are promising the best prospects with the exception of Jay Mingi were seen last season i.e. Vennings, Dempsey and Sarpong Wiredu. Aouachra and Vega had severe injury problems last season and may need a few months to recover time lost, they may be able to make an impact in the new year. Powell and Quiterna hopefully will develop for 21/22 season, Henry who is 17 at the end of this month has been put in the U23 squad and is missing the 2nd. year in the U18s, so is being fast tracked. Ness and Ghandour the recruits from non league could come into the reckoning after a suitable settling in period.Goalkeeper, Harness who joined from non league last season also looks promising.
