Crewe Alexandra 2 Charlton Athletic 1

I hate this division. I hate the fact that my football team look quite at home in it.

Clutching at straws to bemoan a disallowed goal and an appalling refereeing display, although it did go all Hackney Marshes at the end when the bewildered ref spent five minutes talking to a fat linesman about what happened good three minutes after Lee’s shot deflected over the ‘keeper and in. VAR would have a field day in this division.

Charlton Athletic 2 Crewe Alexandra 0

Much better from Charlton today. Great energy at the start, putting a lot of early pressure on them, got the opening goal, then scored a vital second just as Crewe started to have an influence.

2nd half we again started brightest, created chances but couldn’t get a third. Crewe did have their moments and it needed a couple of goal line clearances and MacGillivray saves to keep them at zip, but we should have added to our tally.

League One 2021/22 Review – Part III

Part III then of my annual spot analysis of our competition.

We’ve done the bookies promotion favourites and play-off contenders now for the mid-tablers, where a surprise challenger might spring from, or alternatively one or more of them will have play-off dream’s crushed and instead get embroiled in a relegation battle.

Charlton Athletic 2 Crewe Alexandra 2

That was terrible wasn’t it. Massive must-win game and we flunked it. I can’t help but thinking of the Birmingham game at the end of last season.

It was Crewe Alexandra we were playing wasn’t it? They were so much better than us – just like Doncaster, MK Dons, Accrington, Rochdale, Swindon etc. No need to go on.

League One 2020/21 Preview – Part II

We’ll push on with this even though we are two games in. For Part II we are moving south to Lincolnshire as I continue my preview of our League One competitors.

Lincoln City comfortably survived their first season in tier 3 for over 20 years and will approach this season confident of further improvement under Michael Appleton.

Crewe football special

Crewe Alexandra away actually would have been a decent trip for Addicks on opening day. An hour and a half from Euston, Gresty Road five minutes around the corner from the station, a pint in the Cheshire Inn on the way to the ground. Ugh, normal times — please come back!

21 years since we played at Gresty Road, 60 years since we were at Lincoln City, our second away trip. The more familiar names of Doncaster Rovers and Sunderland, the Addicks’ first two home games. Sunderland possibly our biggest home crowd of the season might be the game used as a trial to let fans return post Covid, although that was slated as September and we have just one home League game in that month.
