Peter Varney steps down at Ebbsfleet

Eh? What? No. Can’t be. Can it?

Peter Varney is stepping down as vice-chairman of Ebbsfleet United. He will no longer sit on the Fleet’s board of directors and will be replaced as vice-chairman by former player Dean Pooley.

Charlton fan Varney has been heavily involved with Ebbsfleet since 2013 when they were taken over by KEH (Kuwaiti European Holdings), for whom Peter is CEO of their sports arm. Varney led and managed all of Fleet’s off field activities but has never been far away from the alarming goings on at The Valley.

Varney was involved in a heavily publicized spat with Roland Duchatelet in early 2016 when it became public that the Belgian and his ex-sidekick Katrien Meire had ignored Varney’s investment overtures from the summer before. Varney was said to have a credible consortium behind him prepared to buy the club.

Question is, does Peter still have an interest in leading or broking a deal to bring fresh owners to SE7 or is his surprising exit from Ebbsfleet just a coincidence?

Picked up on this yesterday from kentlive posting. Is the timing of this information release from varney significant ? Any takeover involving Varney would bring huge credibility amongst fan base, particularly those not currently attending..

As the saying goes – no smoke without fire, it would certainly take a lot of uncertainty away for supporters if Varney was involved in any takeover of the club. If Varney really is involved, then him resigning from Ebbsfleet must give some indication that the takeover is not to far away now, here’s hoping.

If only he and Murray could bury the hatchet and work together for the benefit of our club.

According to Airman Brown on CL, nothing should be seen into this?

  5. Tex, can’t see that ever happening – these are two guys with history and massive egos plus Murray’s still looking for a pay-day – isn’t that why he’s still around? Varney would have to pay – or advise consortium X to pay – over the top RD inflated price for the club plus Murray’s golden goodbye. Two things he’s unlikely to sanction. Yes it would be great to see the old team running the place again but you know what they say…never go back ..nostalgia’s not what it used to be.

The Belgian Bun wants to Sell .Peter has had a major investor interested in Charlton for a long time .IF the Bun genuinely wants to sell (and not hang on til he has sold Konsa) then Peter is in pole position , Ignore for the moment the £50 million the Bun is hoping for ( A ridiculous price) the key question is what level of investment beyond the purchase price is the investor going to put in to build the team ? Peter’s intent i am sure is to gain sufficient investment to get Charlton back into the Premiership. I have heard the total sum of £100 million mentioned
