Up, up and away

Next week’s senile statement missive from Charlton might well mention balloons. 50,000 black and white ones are planned to float around The Valley tomorrow, and I expect lapdog Tony Keohane’s honey to-do list today will include re-writing the list of items banned from bringing into the ground.

In the week of beach ball-gate, the Metropolitan Police have said they are not pursuing a criminal investigation into Addicks’ supporters who accidentally spilled beach balls onto the pitch against Middlesbrough in front of a live TV audience. This should remind us all that the club can do absolutely nothing against lawful and harmless protests.

Also if you haven’t seen this week’s CARD video, it’s a cracker.

Another bitter ex-employee

Katrien Meire told us not to trust any ex-employees because they are liars. So Michael Morrison must have had his toes and fingers crossed when he told the SLP that Meire tried to offload him to Romanian team Astra Giurgiu on loan.

Lies, lies I tell you. But who do you trust? A loyal wholehearted performer who played 150 times for the Addicks or the CEO who we are forced to rely upon for successful recruitment and trading of players?

Birmingham signed Morrison for nothing, zilch, nowt. Tremendous work by the CEO. Bravo.

15 players released

Part one of Luzon/Duchatelet/Meire’s summer transfer strategy was executed today with the announcement of 15 players released.

They are: Tal Ben Haim; Simon Church; Chris Eagles; Roger Johnson; Lawrie Wilson; Oguchi Onyewu; Neil Etheridge; Jack Munns; Harry Osborne; Harry Gerard; Kadell Daniel; Kurtis Cumberbatch; Kieran Monlouis; Rhys Browne; Levander Pyke.

A mixture of the unfortunate attrition of young pros who were unable to step up plus 7 first teamers. My only disappointment is seeing Ben Haim go, although it was apparently his own decision. Not so much disappointed but sad to see Lawrie Wilson and Simon Church move on.

The Welshman scored just 10 goals in Charlton colours, but his work rate could never be questioned, but I expect his career will have to continue down a division.

Lawrie Wilson’s form dipped this season after an excellent 2014/15 season, when I personally thought he was player of the year. He was very friendly with Hamer, Morrison, Hughes and Jackson and an integral part of Chris Powell’s squad but he was sidelined under both Peeters and Luzon and the writing was on the wall. However I am pleased that he was able to come back to the club where he began his career to show us what a great pro he is. Best of luck Lawrie.

Birmingham City 1 Charlton Athletic 0

A late yet deserved goal from City was enough to beat Charlton at St Andrews this afternoon in what sounded a bit of a snooze-fest. Guy Luzon called it the worst performance since he took over, which is a shame because the 1,000+ Addicks deserved better.

The away end also included Johnnie Jackson and Ben Hamer, which for those that had to opportunity to meet them at least made up for such a dismal display, that and Michael Morrison spending time at the end of the game to finally say goodbye to Addicks, most of whom won’t ever understand how the club managed to lose him, and apparently for no fee.

The end of the season is nigh

The end is looking nigh for Millwall after defeat at Blackburn last night. The deadly duo of Gestede and Rhodes banging another nail in the Lions’ coffin, only emphasizing how disappointing Rovers have been this season and I will be amazed if Gary Bowyer can keep his strike pair for another year in The Championship.

Millwall host play-off chasing Derby on Saturday and have to win. Rotherham have Norwich visiting and then their game in hand is at home to Reading next Tuesday. Next week is when the Millers should find out about their ineligible player. It is hard to see the Football League making such a crucial decision by docking Rotherham points, especially when they fined Blackpool £30,000, half of which was suspended, for a similar incident earlier this season.

Morrison signs for Blues

The Club has announced that Michael Morrison will sign for Birmingham when his loan period expires on December 31st. Why this is sad news, it is hardly unsurprising, with Morrison publicly stating recently that he had no future at The Valley under Bob Peeters.

It makes his signing of a new contract in the summer all the more strange, especially as many others didn’t, but at least I hope that means we get a decent fee for him as he will have 18 months remaining on it. We will never know of course as the fee will bound to be undisclosed.

Captain, vice captain and new captain

News today that the skipper will be out until the New Year with a calf injury sustained at Forest on Saturday. There are, in my mind, some prejudiced views that Jackson is past his best, but I would argue he has again been one of our most influential performers in midfield this season, and he will be missed.

Nonetheless his absence will coincide with the continued loan spell of Francis Coquelin and Yoni Buyens’ return, although like others I thought it notable that Peeters put Buyens on the bench and then replaced Jackson with Lawrie Wilson early in the game on Saturday.

Peeters has options anyway, and judging by the last two games when Chris Solly has taken the captain’s armband, I would expect him to lead the team out at The Valley on Saturday.

Morrison leaves for Birmingham

Not surprised at all with Michael Morrison’s departure. After 146 starts in three seasons in the heart of our defence , under Bob Peeters he has made just the one, and only that due to Ben Haim’s religious belief’s.

The vice captain joins Gary Rowett’s Birmingham City on loan until the end of the year, with a 28-day call back.

I like many Addicks have always been a huge admirer of Morrison, since the very first day he pulled on a Charlton jersey. The 26-year old only signed a new 2-year contract in the summer a month after Peeters joined. I suspect like many this was to both appease fans and a back-up in case the Belgian wasn’t able to get the ball-playing defenders in that he wanted.

Call for Morrison

With Tal Ben Haim missing tomorrow’s game at home to Birmingham one would have think Peeters will turn to Michael Morrison to play in his first league game of the campaign.

Morrison is not as cultured in his style as Bikey and Ben Haim, but he is no clogger either and he deserves his opportunity, and I hope he grabs it. Morrison might be a bit game rusty, but he is known as a hard trainer and would have been privvy to the same drills and methods as everyone else and I see no problem with him playing.

Morrison re-signs

As was hoped Addicks were given a big boost this afternoon by the confirmation that Michael Morrison has signed a new 2-year contract. The centre-half has been a consistent performer on the pitch and a strong presence off it since he signed from Sheffield Wednesday 3 years ago.

I’m really glad the club got this deal over the line and now Diego Poyet is the last remaining puzzle to be resolved.

Liking the cut of his jib

I quite liked what Bob Peeters had to say today. Sat in between his boss and Richard Murray, Peeters came across as eager, methodical, personable, witty and up for it.

Duchâtelet looked disinterested and was happy for Peeters to answer all the questions, except for the one about the difference between a head coach and a manager, which startled Roland into action. Meanwhile Murray happily jumped in to explain the benefit of one-year contract agreements, still aggrieved obviously, like we all are, at the £1m the club paid to say goodbye to Alan Pardew.

No contract for Morrison yet

“There is talk something will be sorted out – that’s all well and good – but is that just lip service? I’d like to think that a contract will be offered before I get back off holiday. Whether it does or not, we’ll see.”

If something doesn’t get offered me then I’ll have to go down other routes. I knew I was going out of contract and I’ve spoken to different parties, like anybody would.”

“You want to see some clear direction. When you look at January we brought in players and a lot didn’t play as many games towards the end of the season and at Blackpool only Astrit [Ajdarevic] was available for selection.”

“Please put away your tray tables and turn off all mobile devices.”

Sat on a plane at Miami Airport, I had to turn off my phone at half-time and my mind was then left to race away for two hours overthinking a multitude of potential different outcomes of tonight’s game. Flying above the clouds at 30,000 feet should bring solitude and calm. Oh no, not when Charlton are playing a relegation six-pointer it doesn’t!

Game of poker

It was little over a week ago now since Roland Duchâtelet announced in front of a large audience that he was discussing Chris Powell’s contract “for the coming years.”

That night Powell and Alex Dyer cancelled an appearance at Bromley Addicks, probably to avoid difficult questions from an audience as fans assumed that negotiations were ongoing. That was Thursday.

Men of the month

It had to happen didn’t it? Despite being met with intrepidation by fans, Chris Powell’s November Manager of the Month award is finally recognition for our start to the season. I can only assume that Lee Clark didn’t enter his name this month!

Michael Morrison, who is looking more and more like a cross between Eddie Youds and Steve Thompson, was also the League One Player of the Month. Congratulations to both.

And Morrison makes it a team

With a couple of subs in Nick Pope and Ruben Bover Izquierdo, so 13 new faces in total. There is no denying that is a pretty impressive effort from Chris Powell and the board.
