Duchatelet‘s most reprehensible act?

Roland Duchatelet has made some shameful decisions in his time as Charlton owner, but selling our top scorer, and pocketing the £2m, then offloading high wage earners Nicky Ajose and Billy Clarke and allowing just a short term signing of a 28-year old journeyman from Gillingham in the last 72 hours of the transfer window might top the lot.

As our promotion rivals all around us invested heavily we slunked into the background like someone uninvited to the party. If Bowyer and Jackson keep us in contention, Lennie Lawrence’s crown of adversity will have been well and truly topped.

Mansfield Town 1 Charlton Athletic 1

I’m a bit old fashioned and would like us to take the FA Cup seriously and progress a bit, at least until the 3rd Round. In saying that I fully get why Bowyer made so many changes today, many of which were enforced on him.

There were 9 changes from the game at Walsall, and only 5 sat on the bench. Checkatrade hero Toby Stevenson and Taylor Maloney both began in a midfield five. Dillon Phillips got a chance in goal, but the biggest opportunity of all was for Nicky Ajose. Albie Morgan was on the bench that also saw the return of Billy Clarke after 11 months out.

3 months

Is how long it is expected both Josh Cullen and Igor Vetokele will be out after both dislocated shoulders in the win at Walsall. Tuesday’s victory came with a heavy price. Cullen, on loan from West Ham, has been outstanding at the fulcrum of the midfield.

Injuries

Karl Robinson I remembered earlier in the season was extolling the virtues of his squad. He was a little bit more on message then with Kait and Roly. I have always liked the Scouser’s honesty but recently he has stepped out a little from behind the screen to be a bit more forthright.

Injuries are part and parcel of football, particularly modern day football because I am sure in the 70’a and 80’s players only missed matches if one of their legs had fallen off. Building a squad is all about compensating for missing players due to injuries, resting out of form players and giving the manager formation and tactical options. Robinson has none of these and the cracks are showing.

Time to step up

Karl Robinson has talked about Mark Marshall and Ben Reeves like the coming of the new messiah’s. Reeves missed the whole of pre-season and was signed horribly unfit and with December around the corner he has only played about 120 minutes of league football. Marshall was more unfortunate getting injured in pre-season, and only started his first league game at home to MK Dons on Saturday.

Charlton Athletic 2 Southend United 1

That Billy Clarke is some player..

I looked at the Southend team before the game and thought it looked pretty useful and Phil Brown carries a small squad that has injuries. The Shrimpers by all accounts were organized and carried forward threat, and they dominated possession in the early stages as we struggled to impose ourselves. All those things considered today was a very good victory and momentum is building as is fan belief.

Oldham Athletic 3 Charlton Athletic 4

Andy Nelson would’ve been proud..

One for the oldies that. A swashbuckling performance but leaving gaps at the back to keep it interesting up at Oldham yesterday. According to one observer we played like a troupe of red arrows for the first half hour but after that it was a little bit of a circus troupe as we let Oldham back in. Nonetheless for those Addicks who made the trip I’m sure it was a very enjoyable day out in Lancashire and they were witness to another fine 3 points for Robinson’s side.

We dominated early and unusually got our just rewards. Not once but twice as Ricky Holmes opened the scoring with a 30-yard scorcher. It might be worth the Valley Pass season fee alone that. Then the impressive Fosu scored his first Addicks goal and performed an apple for the teacher like knee slide. 21 minutes gone and all good.

Odd

Would you hire a new employee without speaking to him?

“Charlton Athletic’s new striker Billy Clarke revealed he never met Karl Robinson prior to signing for the club – only having the briefest of chats (on the phone).” More

Just seems a little odd to me. No conversation on a vision, goals, objectives or what KR would demand of Clarke and the other way around.

Billy Clarke

Proper football name that. So it’s a yes from me.

The 29-year old playmaker, number 10 they are called these days, became the Addicks’ first summer signing yesterday. An undisclosed fee but said to be six figures, Clarke spent 3 years at Bradford City and played 40 times last season in the Bantams run to the play-off final.
