The club today issued their released and retained list.
Chris Gunter, Conor Washington, Adam Matthews, Ben Watson, Pape Souare and Stephen Henderson all leave following the expiry of their contracts.
Whereas all of the loan players return to their parent clubs, that is Akin Famewo, who we did have an option to buy, Elliot Lee, Jonathan Leko, Mason Burstow, Nile John and Juan Castillo.

Adam Matthews signed on for a year, whilst Akin Famewo joined on a season long loan, with an option of a permanent move next summer. The 22-year old has a Norwich contract until June 2023.

Looks as if Adam Matthews is the player Lee Bowyer wants as his right-sided defender to complete the final piece of this transfer window jigsaw.
Matthews was outstanding after he came in as a free agent last September. I also thought he was our best performer after lockdown. Unfortunately it says a lot about the current state of the game that he cannot get a contract at another club, but their loss is our gain and he will provide competition for Chris Gunter, remembering that the ex-Reading player can also play on the left side.
Luton Town, once our level, but our level now the same as Crewe Alexander and Accrington Stanley, have signed Tom Lockyer on a free.
Lockyer had a free transfer release clause in his contract if we were relegated. Sterling work again by the Duchatelet brain’s trust.
Skipper Jason Pearce, who injured a knee in training last week has been ruled out for up to 8 weeks. It is not known whether surgery is required.
Pearce was a rock after lockdown and is highly influential among the players, and is going to be a big loss. Those first two months of the season encompass 10 league games.

Pah to the transfer window. Lee and Steve go on. Today 27-year old Welsh right back Adam Matthews signed a one-year deal after a successful trial.
Matthews played 28 games for Sunderland last season, even appearing in their final league game. He left in the summer due to his high wages, one of many still at the Stadium of Light signed in Premier League days. Sam Allardyce signed the then 23-year from Celtic for £2m in 2015, but within weeks Allardyce had gone and David Moyes was chosen. Relegation came next and four further managers, and a another relegation for Matthews to work under.
