Free agent Adam Matthews to sign

Looks as if Adam Matthews is the player Lee Bowyer wants as his right-sided defender to complete the final piece of this transfer window jigsaw.
Matthews was outstanding after he came in as a free agent last September. I also thought he was our best performer after lockdown. Unfortunately it says a lot about the current state of the game that he cannot get a contract at another club, but their loss is our gain and he will provide competition for Chris Gunter, remembering that the ex-Reading player can also play on the left side.
Gunter and Matthews can also be played further up the pitch too as wing backs, giving the option of a central defensive three.
That transformation of the squad that Bowyer and Gallen has put together in the time available is quite remarkable. The squad size is probably as big as 26 if I include youngsters James Vennings and Charlie Barker.
There is competition for places and cover for the obvious injuries and suspensions and there’s also plenty of leaders and experience in there too.
Great news if Matthews signs. But I am concerned that Davison was allowed to join Woking when our strike force of Aneke, Bogle, Washington and Smyth have not proved they are up to the job. We are winning because our goalkeeper and back four are keeping clean sheets and goals are coming from set plays.
Reasonable point although I would say Davison, while looking a great prospect for the future, is also not up to it at the moment. The top of the national league is a decent level to play a good run of games and help his development. If he does well over the next 12-14 games we can recall him in Jan, I don’t see he would help us much at the moment though.
I agree that that Davison would benefit from a loan spell but my point is that Bowyer should have waited until the strikers in place have proved their ability and now that Aneke and Doughty are likely to miss the Oxford game and possibly the Portsmouth game we are short of options up front. Bogle played the full game at Northampton which I am sure would not have happened if Doughty had not picked up an injury, will Bogle be fit enough to do himself justice tomorrow. Davison scored and was man of the match and of course is now cup tied. His ability to press and close down defenders at the end of a game should not be underestimated. How many games did we lose by conceding goals in the last 15-20 minutes of games as forwards like Hemed failed to do their defensive duties up front at the end of games.
Can I just say thank god for the new owner we have and now we can discuss whether this player or that player is a good signing for us we haven’t heard our said that sort of thing since I don’t know when thank you mr sansgard local hero by dire straits should be played at every home game
