Greg Docherty. Thank you.
We haven’t had many Greg Docherty’s in the past decade. Maybe Dobbo, but since Pearce, Jackson and Pratley no one that you felt would speak and play like they would give literally every last breath in a Charlton shirt.
That sorry state of affairs has turned a big corner under Nathan Jones and Greg Docherty is a major reason for that.
The skipper signed from Hull in the summer of 2024 and epitomized everything Jones set out to bring to the club. Jones signed and empowered players that could bridge the deepening chasm between fan and player.
Possibly, Greg Docherty is a no better player that upper level League One, yet he has and will continue to have a rewarding career in the game – he is currently on 418 professional appearances and is fit and motivated enough to play many more.
His footballing limitations, and that is completely the wrong word, meant he had to play, tackle, chase and beyond his abilities. Yet he trained, worked and inspired like an elite athlete.
You cannot train that into anyone. Docherty’s on-field management and leadership is born not developed, and he is an elite human being.
The club and Doc agreeing to part ways is one of those ‘ruthless decisions’ of evolution, which will always leave casualties cast to one side, but in Greg Docherty’s case also leaves terrific memories.

Have to agree with that. A proper captain. Yes, he didn’t use the ball as well as others but without his tenacity and fight at the tail end of last season, we might not have got those points needed to get out of the relegation zone. For me he was our best player in the last two months of the season.
Understand he wants regular football and the way we’ve built in that area it won’t be possible. He’s a free agent now so let’s hope some worthy club snaps him up quickly.

A terrier in midfield and in front of the back three or four. As you have said, not the most gifted footballer, but number one for tenacity and hard work. He will surely add his qualities to someones squad in the coming weeks. Wherever he goes, I’m sure we all wish him well.

Have to totally agree about Greg…totally honest and genuine talented player who gave 100% every game and was a shining beacon in the team since arriving.
I will miss my chats with him and wish him and his family all the best for the future….that will still be bright.
Led by example and 100% reliable, I hope he was treated in a befitting manner. Leicester should snap him up because they need characters like him to put them back on track.
That wouldn’t be a bad move.
I was thinking exactly the same essex keith or Sheffield Wednesday will miss this player so much he is such a nice bloke really down to earth hopefully he will find himself another club soon I for one will follow his progress you ll always be one of ours…
