Expectation levels

Talking Point 🗣️

A bit more on yesterday’s game. I know all too well that when you are an infrequent visitor like I am to live games then you have to lower your expectation level, but yesterday was something else.

Expectation met faith yesterday. It has been a long time since the old stadium had such a good feel about the place, and I was so happy to be apart of that with my son.

Nathan Jones has delivered a belief and optimism but as he tells us frequently this is not the ceiling, but an open road. That road will have plenty of divots in it, but I feel for the first time in more than a decade that Addicks fans can put their foot down on the accelerator with some confidence.

This is a good time to be a Charlton Athletic fan.

7 league games in, and very, very early days. I am not here to rain on any parade’s nonetheless there is no room for chutzpah, Jones will simply not allow that, but there is plenty to look forward to.

Sat in the Covered End yesterday watching red shirts hunt in packs, defend as if their lives depended on it and get forward with pace and aggression all to a soundtrack of a wall of Valley noise was great to see.

It will be Charlton TV again for me for next little while, but I can’t wait to get back.

Yes, you are correct. What a dramatic change we have seen in this past year. This closed season especially has delivered unto us a depth of talent that we have not seen in many seasons.

We have a manager (not a coach) who has a vision of the future and a map showing us how to get there. The clarity and siglemindedness with which that path is being followed is paying off. The board have found a gem and backed him solidly.

My only fear is Jone’s brittle temperament. Don’t misunderstand me, I love this in the man. My fear is that we may be without him as Luton were twice. They were of course, in much better shape after each term. However, I’m beginning to see the potential and that, will only be achieved under his full stewardship. As you say, the road ahead has unseen bumps.

Chris, great post and being a supporter of 7 DECADES we all know the ups and downs of this wonderful club and a very unique club and appreciate the ups and do not get too high or low and sometimes that is difficult.
If a Premiership comes in for Jones, will he jump ship and has done this bedore??

I’d like to think Nathan Jones has learnt his lesson not to jump ship the instant a Premier League team comes knocking. It took him a little while to get things on track at Charlton and I don’t think Stoke or Southampton where prepared to give him the time to bed in and implement his ideas fully. I’d also like to think that Charlton have more potential than Luton and have the fan base and financial backing to get into the Premier and to stay there.

CA. LOL top top post, as usual, until you mentioned Charlton Live whose commentary team apart from the legend Brownie and in any case the site very difficult to get up anyway.

If 40 points is the mark to aim for to beat relegation then we are already a quarter of the way there. Currently we are also better placed than either of the other two promoted sides from last season.

We could be doing even better – we should have beaten Leicester and Millwall. But we learnt from those matches and didn’t lose faith. I think it helps only playing once a week – we play the high press and the team do a lot of running, having a full week off between games has enabled the players to rest without constant Tuesday matches.

Will we lose NJ if an offer comes in? A request to speak to him will happen sooner or later if we keep this form up but I hope that he remembers the stints at Southampton and Stoke and declines it. I think he’s the sort of manager who needs to have his choice of players on the pitch and his training team around him, if he manages in the premiership again then he’ll have to get promoted with a team. Why not Charlton?
