Onel Hernández signs on short term contract

The summer transfer window is still breathing apparently.

Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of Cuban international Onel Hernández (more).

Our first ever Cuban player, the 32-year old was at Norwich City for 7 years after signing for Daniel Farke who would have known him from the German leagues where he began in academy football after he and his mother emigrated from Cuba when he was six.

Hernández played over 200 games for the Canaries, including 26 in the Premier League, and also had a loan season at Championship clubs Middlesbrough and Birmingham midway through his Norwich career.

At his Norwich peak with Teemu Pukki playing up front Hernández was a bit of an assist machine.

I can’t say I know much about him, but it seems he was a cult figure at Carrow Road. He made 26 appearances last season, mostly from the bench, and was released in June at the end of his contract.

I don’t see any correlation with Josh Edwards’ injury, Hernández was already training with the Addicks and is really a wide man, right footed but mostly playing on the left side. He could be a good weapon from the bench and TC, Apter and Fullah don’t quite fit the out and out winger bill.

Jones does like an experienced voice in the dressing room, and a short-term deal until January doesn’t represent much of a gamble. He also sounds like he passed the good character test.

He has 15 Cuba caps and was part of their recent World Cup qualification squad.

Welcome to SE7 Onel.
