Sheffield United 0 Charlton Athletic 1

We all would’ve taken a point beforehand, but that is a fantastic win.

It was important that we started solidly and we did, but in trademark Nathan Jones style we finished really strong and Tanto Olaofe got the winner with 89 minutes on the clock.

Olaofe scored his first Addicks’ goal converting a Bree cross in front of 2,000 travelling fans and the win was fully deserved.

Jones put Burke in to replace Ramsey and Bree came in for Apter which made sense bearing in mind the occasion and the weather.

We made it unscathed through the first half, but we had the best chances with Kelman dragging a shot wide and then towards the end of the half Lloyd Jones had a thumping header well saved.

The Bramall Lane crowd were expectant but they tensed in the 2nd half, and there were few chances in terrible weather conditions.

Edwards was brave in blocking a shot and Docherty, who was everywhere, headed two crosses wide.

‘Game changers’ Leaburn, Knibbs and Olaofe were all introduced. Leaburn forced another good save from Blades’ ‘keeper, and then Bree shot over as Jones’ team upped the ante.

Each of the subs made an impression, but Olaofe made the biggest impression of all slamming home the winner in front of a delirious away end.

Ignoring their league start and even the return of Chris Wilder, Sheffield United away was always going to be one of the toughest trips of the season, but top marks today Addicks, who again showed we belong.

🎙️“It was just an excellent win. I thought we deserved it. If you look at the context and the difficulty of the game; this is Sheffield United, away, full house, returning manager who’s been synonymous with success here so to put in that level of performance I thought was outstanding.” – Nathan Jones

No complaints about that result, it was deserved (apparently) and needed.
I’m still concerned about our lack of goals. Four in six league games, never scored more than one (in the league)

.An absolutely stunning performance. We rode our luck on the odd occasion, but held firm. Sheffield Utd won’t be in their current position come next May, mark my words. So we can mark that down as three points off of one of the ‘big boys’ today. As well as we played today, as I have said in previous posts, I would love to see Olaofe and Knibbs given a starting berth at some stage, to see what they can really do over ninety minutes.

That’s why I support this club, just brilliant!
It was a tough game with the rain, some dubious police decisions on the nearby roads and the new manager factor.
We worked hard, defended like warriors, defensively we were excellent. Bree had a tremendous game ( looks a good player) his contributions were good, and the two footed control in setting up the goal was excellent. Burke was good as well, and showed the quality he has. I am ever impressed with Bell and hope he continues with this form. I thought Doherty in midfield had one of best games for us, he put in a shift today and perhaps should have scored. NJ got his match tactics right..some in the crowd were questioning his decision not to play apter, but it he proved them wrong.
TC looks like he settling in, but improvement in his final decision making can be better. But he caused problems today with his pace. As you say CA the game changers made an impact.. thought Leaburn should have scored with his chance, but was a nuisance to them. Pleased for olafe as well, the emotional response with his goal was intense and amplifies why we support this club. I appreciate that not everyone can get to the games and many sit at home watching. But I hope you felt that emotional feeling of getting an away win.. being there felt we were against the odds, which made the win even more sweeter. It was a good team performance and we know how 3pts in this league is so important despite who we are playing. Chatting to
some Sheffield Utd fans afterwards, they had no beef with the result. They do expect Wilder will turn it around but were critical of their US owners. It is still a long season, but if we get more days like these, then bring it on! Finally I applaud the 2000 of our fans who made that trip for all the challenges encountered. Got behind the team and sang their hearts out.

Red-Army – I felt it. Cannot beat a last minute winner away from home. I was actually with my parents and son – a house full of Addicks jumped up when the goal went in.

Good for you getting up there. I felt a collective sigh and sense of inevitability when Wilder was appointed this week. That was all the media was focused on, but never underestimate little old Charlton, and superb backing from the 2,000 up there.

Enjoy your day of rest mate.

Sheffield United were close to promotion last season, to beat them away even after their poor start to the season is a big win.

I feared the new/returning manager bounce and it was there – they had a lot of possession but we defended brilliantly in tough conditions and then had that bit of final third quality that we’ve lacked with James Bree’s perfectly weighted pass/cross and all Tanto Olaofe had to do was steer it into the net.

Maybe again we left a couple of goals out there – Doc had a couple of decent headers, Kelman probably wasn’t going to score early on but the shot needed to have been on-target etc but we took the one chance we needed.

Four of our new recruits have now scored.

I was wondering too whether Olaofe should start – I don’t think playing Kelman up front on his own works, he might be better being one of the gamechangers playing alongside Leaburn? Olaofe has a bit more of a physical presence and can do the hold up/battling play job quite well.

    Terrific win.
We have had a tough start. I had predicted 5 points by now and we have 8. With a bit more luck we would have had 2 more from the Millwall game and another point from a draw vs Leicester.
If we can get 2 points from Blackburn & Derby we should be very pleased with our return to this level.
Long season etc etc but it so much fun playing this standard.

Unfortunately I only get to see games played within a couple of hours drive from York. Travelled down to watch the game and although SU had more possession, Kaminski really didn’t have to do anything too serious. Charlton were solid. The issue I have is with SU, their ticketing system had issues and there were many fans still trying to get in after the start of the game, me included. This was a shame as I understood a tribute was happening for Steve Thompson, who I admired, not because he had great skills, as a defender ,but he knew what he could do. This was normally any threat and the ball was in row Z, giving time to get the team organised. Why did they not delay the match for 15 minutes?

I didn’t hear about the Steve Thompson tribute. Shame that was missed. Great player RIP.

At last we have momentum and the belief we can get a deserved result….3 points more towards the goal of being safe in the championship.
Well done boys and roll on the next team

So chuffed with the result I didnt expect this But i am an over cautious ninny ,any way Shame about our lack of goals But to be fair i think there are a few clubs in this low scoreing league that are in a similar position What peeves me though is NJs non commital in the strikers position and his retisence to loanees Rak Sakyi and the last minute Chelsea, fall through, springs to mind As well as Fukuda or anyone of his ilk Godden will fill the gap until a striker of substance can be aquired in the next window
