U18’s lose to Blades in final

A fair bit of dodgy reffing today saw the U18 Addicks lose in the Professional Development League 2 Play-Off Final 2-1 to Sheffield United today.

With both The Valley and Bramall Lane being re-turfed, the game was sadly played at The Blades training ground in Shirecliffe.

Basically all our fault then

Huh.

Roland Duchatelet’s interview today with Jim White on talkSPORT started rather sedentary, but by the end of it will have had the vast majority of Charlton fan’s blood boiling.

The man is an out and liar and a grade one delusional fool. If you haven’t listened then click the link but make sure the cat is outside and you are close to a strong drink.

Charlton Athletic 1 Sheffield United 1

A thoroughly undeserved point on Saturday after Patrick Bauer equalized in taxi time against most people’s promotion favourites Sheffield United.

Despite United’s dominance and a superb display from young Dylan Phillips, the Blades only had a single goal to show for it, a well worked free kick move. As we all know one goal is never often enough and sure enough from a lovely Adam Chicksen free kick, the big German bundled in late.

League One preview – part III

Part I is here and Part II is here.

Rochdale under Keith Hill have made the transition to League One look fairly comfortable. Two top ten finishes are not to be sniffed at as Dale keep company with much bigger and financially stronger clubs. Hill also remains at Spotland and unlike 95% of the countries managers, you have to think that the manager does control quite a lot of his own destiny.

Just a couple of additions aligned with a bit of a clear out, should mean that Dale at least stand still but with the lowest home attendance in the division last season, Hill must continue to get his players to punch above their weight. Led by young skipper Jamie Allen, it is not a squad of household names although Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, ex of Peterborough and Wolves, is there, but it is a young but clearly a non-intimidated group of players. Hill and is his team should expect a mid table finish again. Promotion 12/1. Relegation 9/2.

Sheffield United 2 Charlton Athletic 0

That was so Charlton. From the sanctuary of my front room I thought we looked pretty composed and comfortable before they scored, and then the second….. what a killer a blow. Honestly, how many deflected goals have we conceded this season?

I fear for us now.

Onto Bramall Lane

Our FA Cup run has been a chink of sunshine peeping out between dark clouds this season and I still can’t believe we have made it to the last eight of the FA Cup for only the 4th time in my 40 years supporting the club.

The performances have been good though, especially on the road and just when we appeared to reach new lows in the league a Cup game would appear on the fixture list, we’d collectively frown, and then they’d go and put in a professional performance. Another would be pretty sexy.

Sheffield United 0 Charlton Athletic 2

There are games that define seasons, there are games that alter fortunes and there are those singular results and performances that give you a real sense of belief.

It is far too early to tell if yesterday’s result will define our season and the victory didn’t alter our wonderful early season march, but what it did do was send a powerful message not just to our opponents but to us. Years of decay have left confidence in tatters amongst supporters and I don’t think I was alone thinking that yesterday, in fact the whole of the past week, would tell us something about Chris Powell and his players.
