Northampton Town 0 Charlton Athletic 5
Absolutely no idea where that performance came from, but happy that it did. Take nothing away from the team today, they were excellent.
Our most dominant performance away from home for many a season, and chuffed for the 2,000 Addicks who more out of devotion than expectation spent their Saturday before Christmas in Northampton.
I will say first that Northampton were very poor, yet you can only beat what is put in front of you, and frustratingly we don’t do that anywhere enough.
We scored as many goals in that first half as we had done all season, and despite all the front-footed nonsense we have rarely started games well, but they did today and as Northampton’s caretaker manager said, we looked like scoring every time we attacked.
Emboldened with some actual width TC and Small were a menace down the sidelines. Leaburn interchanging with Campbell was turning their defence around and all supplemented by some creative movement and passing from our midfield.
The performances from Berry and particularly Docherty, were what I was hoping from them after they signed in the summer. The skipper has been a real disappointment so far, but he showed some real quality in his movement and awareness today. I particularly liked the way he finished his second goal.
In all honesty Northampton showed no signs of making any kind of a comeback in the 2nd half but it would have been easy for us clear our lines, sit behind the ball, and stick to what they had achieved at the break, but Charlton looked hungry for more and it was funny to see Hylton get his goal to silence the home fans who were giving him so much stick.
Every goal was good. Docherty finished his first goal well, Leaburn’s pass and TC’s finish for the second was clinical and even though Miles was assisted by an opponent’s wayward header, he still had to bring an awkward ball down and finish.
Towards the end I was thinking who was our MoM, and for the first time this season it was really hard as they all played well.
Despite our attacking play getting the plaudits tonight, I do think Lloyd Jones is so important if we are to do anything this season. He provides an unflappable base at the back, which gives both Mitchell and Gillesphey clear confidence.
For once a good day to be an Addick. Feliz Navidad 🎅
🎙️”I’m proud of the level of performance because when you play for Charlton, you’re under a lot of pressure. There’s expectation, there’s a weight on the club, there’s a weight on you when you come here. It’s not a normal club to play for in League One. And they’ve had to suffer a bit lately.” – Nathan Jones

A long overdue but welcome performance.
a most welcome team performance and a fantastic result. Christmas come early for us! Can we follow this up on Boxing Day and beyond into the NY? Hmmmmmmmmmm…….
happy Christmas to you CA, your family and all your readers.

Flabbergasted for the right reason..
Man of the match – Greg Docherty, he was signed as our midfield general who was going to stamp some authority on the game and make stuff happen. Before yesterday he struggled, looked a bit over-stretched in a three man midfield and hasn’t had the impact that I expected. Yesterday he ran the game and scored twice and had to do a bit with both goals. I’m pleased to see him getting in the box, overlapping with other players and looking for those sort of chances.
We need to follow this up with three points on Boxing Day though.
Although things have been underwhelming to date we aren’t that far from the play-offs and with our defence looking stronger with Lloyd Jones back we need to build on this. The last time I felt optimistic this season was after the Birmingham game, yesterday’s win was just our second in the league since then.
I was there yesterday sitting on the half way line. Lloyd Jones was the man of the match he totally organized the defenders and others around him. Top player. Tom eaves tried to bully him as NT obviously targeted him, but he shrugged that off.
Malta addick.
What a game to pick, Ken. Glad you were there.
“One swallow doesn’t make a Summer”…but we demonstrated that we can improve our game and score good goals. It is a confidence thing and maybe Jones didn’t moan at them in the dressing room before the game.
Fingers crossed we can continue this improved performance on Boxing day and beyond.I am concerned about the January window and who will be poached?
Wishing CA and veryone a Very Merry Xmas and 2025

Well well well. What a Christmas present. Happened to be with some other addicks yesterday afternoon and wish the team and NJ could have seen the reaction. Anyone would have thought we had won the bloody cup. I knew that performance was there somewhere. Thank god. Now do it again, and again ..
Merry Christmas CA.
Merry Christmas to you and the family, LP.
Fully agree with you CA a strong and good performance with at last some entertainment. Now we have to win our boxing day game with some conviction, otherwise we will be back to same place again after the Birmingham game and the fans won’t put up with another round of garbage football!
Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year and hopefully that your blogs will be full of good cheer for 2025! 🙂
Merry Christmas to you Mike. I will try 🙂
A super performance and a nice Christmas present for us all. More on Boxing Day would be icing on the cake, and a great springboard into the New Year. On a personal note. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family CA, and to all CAFC supporters everywhere.
And the same to you, Greg. Merry Christmas.
