Charlton Athletic 1 Oxford United 2

Once BA staff announced at the beginning of our flight today that there would be no Wi-Fi I slumped back into my seat, put my hands in my pockets Appleton style and immersed myself in a Scandinavian crime series.

I quite recommend being blissfully unaware of Charlton at the moment.

This has been a truly devastating run of games and we now have to convince new signings to join us for a potential relegation fight as we now sit just six points above the bottom four. Five wins off the play-off’s if anyone is still counting.

Injuries are cursing us again with no Alfie May today, but I’ve read that for periods we showed some half decent attacking play, and even took an early lead through Campbell (C).

However, what were those subs about? Each one more negative than the other. Was Appleton trying to protect a point?

For the sixth consecutive game we concede late. Something is fundamentally wrong and the man who Andy Scott told us was really good on the grass and some sort of tactician wizard is proving nothing more than an arrogant chancer.

MoM: Lo Kauppi (Ulrika in A Nearly Normal Family 😉)

Appleton of my eye: “It’s one of them.” And you certainly are Michael….

Elsewhere: Below us Carlisle beat next week’s opponents Port Vale 2-1, Wycombe beat Bristol Rovers 3-2, Wigan drew 1-1 at Barnsley and Reading beat Exeter 3-2.

A much better team display on show but and a very very big but…another late goal late in the game following our substitutions.
Why was Louie once again benched and not involved in the game.
Appleton unwisely claimed he was not ‘doing it’s in training..what !!!????
His frustration was obvious at the end of the game.
Rumour has it Luton are unhappy with lack of game time and are thinking about taking him back !!
Ashley was my man of the match and pulled off some fantastic saves.
At the end of the game fans did make their feelings loudly known and Appleton sneeked off with no reaction.
Not a great start to 2024.
Good job you didn’t have wi-fi CA otherwise the drinks trolley would have been damaged either emptied or dented.

As soon as Oxford equalised there was only going to be one result. We looked a side with no confidence and no direction. The defence looked woeful and conceded late once again. More drivel from Appleton. Welcome to 2024 everyone.

The most worrying thing for me was the fact that for once the players looked like they were actually trying, yet they still got beaten. The personnel and the tactics are clearly just not good enough. Louie Watson must have fallen out with Appleton – his dad’s comments on New Year’s day attest to that. The subs were ridiculous – too late and just plain wrong. Even my 6 year old couldn’t understand why Thomas was brought on and Fraser is quickly becoming the next Kirk. New lows, and that’s saying something…
