Darren Bent

Too nostalgic or a welcome homecoming? We’ll never know as Darren Bent didn’t seem to be on our loan radar, but he was on Brighton’s, who plan to sign Darren on loan until the end of the year.

I personally would have taken the gamble, although said to be earning a stonking £60,000 a week, it would be interesting to see how much of that Brighton are paying every 7 days. Roland Duchâtelet would have spat out his waffle at the thought of it and certainly that kind of money doesn’t appear in our Financial Fair Play (FFP) plan, although it makes you realise why clubs such as Brighton voted against the FFP proposals.

Darren Bent brings back some happy Addick memories and the mere mention of his name induces the same sentimental tears that thoughts of Derek Hales and Clive Mendonca do. I can see him now sprinting away from a bedazzled Premier League back line to slot home with ease and turn away with his fists clenched.

Bent scored 37 goals in 77 games in a Charlton shirt, all at the highest level, but that was 7 years ago and he left us at the age of just 23.

He has been much maligned in his time at Villa Park, although he’s still scored 71 league goals in 135 Premier League starts for Tottenham, Sunderland and Villa since he signed for Spurs for £16,500,000.

He didn’t change Fulham’s fortunes last season, but was used mostly from the bench but I think a bit of Covered End love would have done him the world of good, and for all we know, he might have been thinking that too, but sadly there won’t be any homecoming.
