The mysterious case of Lewis Page

Ben Purrington maybe the 7/10 no headlines player, but he will be missed greatly at Fulham on Saturday when Lee Bowyer will turn to either Deji Oshilaja or probably Naby Sarr in a back three as we take on the threat of the joint leading goal scorers.

Bowyer described the absence of Lewis Page as “mind boggling.” The 23-year old has not played for over a year after beginning last season so well showing tenacity and a real threat going forward, and quickly becoming popular with Addicks.

Text message

The communication machine is well and truly in motion among Roland Duchatelet’s power cracker management elite. Not quite a trans-channel telegraph but a text message, sent to Lee Bowyer last night telling him that he will probably get an offer of some kind from the owner next week.

Outwardly at least, Bowyer looks as if not much bothers him and rightly is putting results and performances over and above waiting for a text message “from someone who works for the owner.” Bowyer also reminds those concerned that Johnnie Jackson and Andy Marshall and he come as a team. All three of those gentlemen’s work will not have gone unnoticed by others.

Lewis Page signs contract extension

Let’s not deny it, but Lewis Page has more reason than most of the other young starlets that Lee Bowyer is attempting to secure to a contract extension beyond the end of this season, to sign one.

The injury plagued 22-year old has only played 55 league games, the majority of those coming this year, and just as he was starting to establish himself under Bowyer’s tutelage, once again the unfortunate left back is on the sidelines. Page know he needs a run of games and to be settled and hence it’s no surprise to me that he is the first player out of those offered to commit.

Scunthorpe United 5 Charlton Athletic 3

Funny, well not funny, but only yesterday one of my commenters said that our problem was that we were letting too many goals in. I replied saying we had the joint 6th best defensive record in the league. We did.

Without a doubt we have often looked shaky at the back this season, not helped by any means of it being chopped and changed due to injuries. There is also the worthwhile argument that Dillon Phillips should never have lost his place between the posts.

We played like a team of Lee Bowyer’s..

Off the pitch we haven’t yet got our Charlton back, but on it yesterday under the management of Lee Bowyer we appeared to move a big step in the right direction.

After the rigidity of Robinson, Bowyer talked afterwards about being flexible in his formations, picking them based on who we are playing. The caretaker went with two up front, Zyro and Ajose. He played a diamond in the middle to nullify a threat from Argyle that he had picked up on after watching them during the week. JFC and Reeves were the north and south points with Aribo and Fosu wide. He relied on additional width from his full backs welcoming back Page and giving Dijksteel a start at right back. Pearce was installed as captain and played alongside Bauer with Amos in goal. Interestingly there was no place on the bench for new assistant manager Jacko.

Please let it stop. I want to get off..

Absolute shocker of a performance tonight. If that is a group of players with a point to prove, then they are an embarrassment, as is their manager, who in tonight’s game of excuse bingo (17 minutes long) blamed the takeover for the way the players are performing. Oh the players have families and don’t know if they are going to have a contract in summer…. They don’t deserve a f-in contract.

The Tangerines are smiling

Whereas Roland Duchatelet can be found guilty of mass incompetence, utterly poor management and sheer stubbornness he has, as far as I know, has never illegitimately asset stripped the club. The Oyston family are a different matter though and after Monday’s high court ruling that ordered Owen and Karl Oyston to pay £31m to the minority shareholder, Valeri Belokon.

Fox farmed out. Replaced by Lewis Page

The latest on the academy production line was sold today. Morgan Fox signed for long term suitors Sheffield Wednesday for an undisclosed fee, thought to be £700,000, which is quite a lot less than Meire turned down in the summer.

Anyway, the best of the luck to the Morgan, who did make 116 appearances for the club and to be fair I think the lad needs a fresh start. In my mind Fox never gave less than 110% for the club, where had been since he was 14. He was always first over to thank the fans, and wore his heart on his sleeve and gave everything to his best ability, and I never understood why he was singled out for stick, because there were far more deserving cases.
