When two world’s collide
I’m flying to London tonight and will be at the game tomorrow. I try not to be one to over-dramatize but this a very big week in SE7.
Over the years, even especially since I have lived overseas, I would much rather be at a game than watch or listen to it. Of course as I got older other priorities have taken precedence, but being there over hiding behind the sofa hasn’t changed.
However one other rule I have also long abided by is to never mix football with work. I think twice I took up an invite to go as a guest of a work partner. Once at Old Trafford as that was the only way I was going to get a ticket, and once in Derby’s corporate area.
At Old Trafford I over celebrated a Mark Kinsella goal, and was stared at by those around me for the rest of the match, and then at Derby my host was told to quieten me down after Martin Pringle scored.
Work is work and Charlton is a whole different planet of emotional wreckage. I have had work friends for 40 years who think they know me, but have never seen me wrapped around a stranger in some far flung away end blubbering and screaming like a baby.
Anyway, that rule will be bent tomorrow as I will be joined by a client and a couple of colleagues at The Valley. My penance for me changing everyone’s dinner plans by me saying sorry, but I’m off to watch a game of football.
So, they are coming with, but I have them seats in the Alan Curbishley and I will be in the Covered End with my mates, brother and son.
I think I’d rather be behind the sofa and have them sat next to me, especially tomorrow.
COYR.
