Doing the basics
Talking point š£ļø
If you put together a Nathan Jones phrase cloud then ādoing the basicsā would be in 400 font.
In my job we talk often about basics, or fundamentals being the foundation of making better decisions. Doing the basics happens across the white line and on a football pitch. Building a foundation for professional footballers making better decisions is honed on the training ground.
What I am seeing is not a group of men who donāt want to play for their manager, nor a group of players who donāt care. We know what that looks like, Charlton fans, football fans have seen that before.
Regularly I shake my head when fans shout out āworst team ever.ā Have you been under a rock for the last decade?
This is a group extremely low on confidence, prone to errors, not willing to take a chance, and letās be honest, as a collective and in some cases individually, not good enough for this cut-throat level.
The manager will carry the can, and Nathan Jones is far too deep and emotionally attached to need to be told that.
A new voice, a different way of doing things during the week may well have a desired effect, maybe a bounce, but this is a group of players that wonāt change, and by the looks of it an ownership that wonāt support a big January transfer splurge.
Iām not even going to get into who could or would takeover as manager, that will wait for another day, but for the minute we are all hurting and we can all do our bit, but Jones will have to find it deep within himself to somehow get this group of players to grind out a performance, two performances over the next week.
To make better decisions, when all around you there is angst, anger and nerves.
And, you know what these same conversations are going on in pubs, around dinner tables and of course on social media between Preston, Derby, Burnley, Watford, Bolton, Wrexham and even West Ham fans.

Iām confident NJ will turn it around, enough to keep us up at least. Thereās nobody better out there waiting to perform a miracle with this team, the simple fact is that weāve spent the kind of money on the whole team that the better clubs in this division spend on one player, so what do we expect.
The usual detractors have come out of the woodwork & are having a field day as weāve gone off the rails after our good start, but I think NJ will still muster enough to shut the boo boys up again, especially those making unwarranted and charmless personal attacks on his integrity as a man not just as a manager.
At last, someone that actually understands the dynamics instead of taking out of their AH.
Well said.
We have said already we have a League One side which can only be improved with investment by the owners who, as you say, are getting cold feet. Like you say NJ has earned the right to have the chance to keep us up. Sorry to say, but more promoted clubs into the Championship are relegated back to League One in their second year than the first.
With a couple of additions in January I think we can do it.

Thats very well put CA i ve always said NJ deserves his chance i am one of the most patient Charlton fan but even my patience can run out i do hope NJ can turn this around after all he got us here look where we were when he took charge 23rd in league 1 if my memory serves me correctly. We need to get behind our team on Tuesday night more than ever so lets give these lads an extra push sing our hearts out and get behind them we all need this next win.. COYR
Valley faithful can play a major part in home games and Tuesday and Saturday is the time for fans to make the Valley a very uncomfortable place for Bolton and Sheffield. We need to re-create the atmosphere we created in the play -offs last season.
Nathan and players have made it clear that fans support really helps the confidence.
Let’s get rid of the moaning and do our bit !!!
I was also at the Valley to watch Charlton women take on Chelsea and it was abundantly clear the wide gap between us and them.
Chelsea are a top team with a squad of international players and it showed.
Big credit to Karen and her players who never never gave up and the determination to try and win was commendable.
I admire the Charlton squad who despite losing again did their best.
Time for the players to step up not the supporters!!!
Sorry John West….agree but we can help that
It must be the most frustrating thing for a manager, to set your team up and then see it undone by these constant individual errors, which you cannot legislate for.
It feels like every slip or loose pass is being punished at the moment, which obviously impacts the fragile confidence of some of these players. But as you say, they are still trying for NJ, and I don’t believe that he has lost the dressing room. I think some of these players are thankful for the opportunity to be playing in the Championship, as a fair few of them would still be plying their trade down in League One or Two, not for the impact of NJ on their careers.
On the upside, I’m glad that Kelman is back in the team, as much like Godden, I think he has goals in him. With him in there, you feel like the is more of a possibility of us grabbing something.
I’m feeling optimistic about Tuesday, more so than I should do. I’m sure that it has been mentioned a million times on here, but as a Charlton fan it really is the hope that kills you!
In my opinion we have enough players good enough to push us up the league but where it goes wrong is the starting 11 and some of the tactics.
Itās so much more difficult to win a game when I see better players sitting on the bench and tactics that are good for 10 minutes until the other team tweaks things and we have no answers.
2 wins by the end of the week and me looking stupid
I would love that.
A so-called professional football club and how dare you take it out on proper supporters of 7 and even 8 decades.
And top to bottom and including the media teams too!!! John West
