My hurt sunk a little when I saw the team, but my head was telling me it was the sensible approach.
Tottenham put out a strong side, dropping more than resting I’d think only 5 players and filling their bench with players worth tens of millions.
The aim pre-match was in no order: not get humiliated, have a good old sing song in the away end, try to score a goal in the away end, and no injuries. Well we failed massively on the last point.
Firstly the game. I thought we did well for the first 40 minutes. We used our physicality, we kept a good shape and had the best two chances, but the two goals before half-time killed us.
Brooks probably should’ve got hands on the first one, and Ouma didn’t show well for their second.
2nd half again I thought once again we settled well, but I had to go out on the hour for birthday drinks, and it all sounded like it fell apart when I was in the taxi.
Still, I was heartened to hear that we were more progressive following the subs and Leaburn and Mwamba came in for praise.
It was a mad debut for Brooks, who last played a game in January in front of 4,000 people. I thought Asiimwe was good, Knibbs poor, Apter so-so, and although it was hard to judge Ouma, I wasn’t impressed.
However the injuries to Sichenje and Koumetio did not look good and it was hard to think about much else after. Later my heart sank further when I was out and saw Nathan Jones’ comments post game.
What should’ve been a nice little night out in north London has turned into a bit of a disaster, but hopefully those that went enjoyed it.
My feelings exactly and now made worse by not signing Rak-Sakyi, who I thought was going to be the final piece in the jigsaw. All round, a disastrous night. Need to focus on three points v Preston, maybe get Gough or Mitchell back for Saturday?
I don’t know the situation of returning loans before January. Can we do that?
Can’t disagree with you, I went to the game and the real negative point was losing Koumetio and Sichenje after only 10 minutes. That could really affect our Championship season as neither look like short term injuries. What’s also disappointed me was the number of Charlton fans who left after abiut 70 minutes, Im notnsure what they expected against a team worth 100s of millions of pounds but possibly last weekends win against West Ham raised their expectations well into unrealistic levels.
Now we must focus on the weekends game against Preston, I just hope last night’s defeat hasn’t disrupted our momentum and we dont miss the injured guys too much
What is wrong with Knibbs he looks a really poor footballer. I thought we had bought someone half decent from his time at Reading.
Have been waiting for your post CA to lift my mood. Woke up just thinking about Collins and Billy, but mostly Collins as I have a massive soft spot.
We were there – I really wanted to see the stadium of course as used to go to WHL a bit in the 70s/80s (when Charlton played away and you could just turn up at the turnstile and get in) but I can safely say will never go there again. Not because of the game itself but because of all that it says about what is awful about the premier league. And getting home was a nightmare – who’d want to do that every week? Another stadium with no infrastructure to support the numbers.
I enjoyed the 40 minutes as it was so unexpected having seen the team. We may have been able to compete above ourselves last time in the premiership but it has changed so much I think that can never happen again. And loved Lloydies goal – god bless him. As for all those fans moaning about the line up – get real. It would have made no difference whatever team we played. £320 million, yes million, spent in the summer and we had a young man who played with Colchester last season up front. And I would rather the 1st team hadn’t been demoralised – Saturday is much more important. We have a lot of games to play in September.
(And just who was that ignorant premiership-loving pundit who said we got what we deserved – he’s on my list!).
There’s much I could say about last nights game. If I say it i’ll just get bombarded with the usual opprobium.
So I’ll say only this:
A lot of Charlton fans had to expend a lot of time, trouble and money, to be there. (not me, fortunately)
Nathan Jones should be embarrased to have let them down so badly.
People talking about a dodgy pitch that could be the reason for those two serious injuries to vital players. Thank goodness NJ had the good sense not to risk any more of our first team out there on a meaningless cup game. Nobody really went in the expectation of winning, more to have a gander at a new stadium, which has had mixed reviews. I’m very happy that we’ve kept some of our powder dry for Saturday.
What a disappointment.
However, this game and the horror of losing two player is now behind us.
We must be positive and think how far we have come and hopefully will continue to progress.
Let’s hope that the injuries are not as significant as first thoughtand that these two guys will beback sooner rather than later.
We still have very good squad with players returning daily.
If we need extra cover we may be able to to find it with loaned and or out of contract players.
Not ideal but it is what it is,
Personally,I think we should stick to the Master Plan and still sign Jesu from Crystal palace.-then we would have two excellent wingers who would provide cover for each other.
Keep the faith,this is a blow but not terminallyAs long as we don’t lose on Saturday,we are still progressing,buying time and a bright future will still beckon

I don’t get the negativity about the game against Tottenham I’m not NJ no1 fan but we lost in a silly cup game that most of the big teams don’t take seriously until the semi finals
Tottenham have a team worth millions with some fantastic players did anyone really think we was going to win it
Birmingham got hammered 6-1 at home so I don’t think we was that bad it just shows the gulf in money between the premier league and the lower leagues
The only bad thing was injured players and RSJ not signing
