Millwall’s Danny McNamara signs
Right back Danny McNamara has signed a two year contract after being released by Millwall in the summer.
McNamara played 166 times for our neighbours but after playing 16 times last season moved on after 11 years in SE16.
An experienced no-nonsense Championship defender who was at Charlton as a schoolboy doesn’t set the pulse racing, and I’d hope would be a back up at right back. He did also spend a fair amount of time at left back for Millwall too and has versatility.
The fully fledged Millwall fan has been booked 49 times in his career.
After leaving Charlton at the age of 14 he played semi-pro before joining Millwall as a scholar and played on loan at a variety of clubs but his break out season was at Newport County when he was 21.
McNamara suffered an ACL injury in January 2025 and was out for 10 months. His contract was due to expire in June 2025, but Alex Neil gave him a year’s extension and the 27-year old played 17 games after returning in November.
Alex Mitchell was signed from the other side of the tracks, but before that I remember Alan McLeary and further back Dave Mehmet and Phil Walker, He was good at least!

It is increasingly looking like we will be lining up in a 4-2-3-1 formation next season, and you would have thought that this will be the last signing in defence. I’m happy with Ramsay (not sure what to make of the Torino rumours!) as a traditional right-back, with less focus on the attacking aspect of his game, with McNamara as back-up.
I don’t sense any movement in the keeper position, as much as I think that it has the potential to be a problem going forward, but much would rely on finding a buyer for Kaminski, which I don’t see happening.
I think that we are all waiting for the midfield signings, which NJ alluded to in a recent interview. These will be critical in how we view the success of this transfer window, as it is clearly our problem position. Personally, I would have kept Anderson over Coventry, but if he wanted regular first team football, then I wish him well, as I do Alex Mitchell…
Does this signing confirm that Ramsey may well be leaving us for Italy or is the timing just cincidental?
Nathan Jones does like a no-nonsense defender who has a bit of thou shall not pass physicality about him and Danny McNamara fits that template. Alex Mitchell has been sold to Plymouth so our defensive work has just abut been done. The one outstanding thing being Kayne Ramsay, he’s in the last year of his contract and if he’s not going to extend it then we need to be ruthless and sell him before he walks away on a free.
We need to work on a central/creative midfielder now and the other rumour is that Greg Docherty might be returning northwards.
Is it just me or do the new signings not seem as exciting as last season’s I know there are 3 weeks to kick off and we have had a World Cup but I’m just not going wow they are great

One in , one out with Alex Mitchell moving on. We need cover on the right defensive side with Clarke going back to Ipswich.
Low risk signing, championship experience, 27, hopefully can add some depth to the squad. Now please let’s focus on the midfield.
