Peter ‘Scoop’ Burrowes RIP
Peter Burrowes was synonymous with Charlton Athletic, and he sadly passed yesterday aged 87 following a short battle with cancer.
‘Scoop’ as he was known in the press room had been a fixture of my entire Charlton supporting life, and just like the loss of Colin Cameron The Valley won’t be the same again with him not in it.
His voice would transport what was going on at far flung grounds across the country into my families living room where we all sat around a radio listening to LBC on a Saturday afternoon.
His words I’d read back to front in the Kentish Independent. We had to wait on news and opinion back in those days.
He was a the press officer at Charlton during the 80’s and 90’s including those trippy days under Lennie Lawrence.
He was also the voice of the ClubCall line, which pre-internet acted as a transfer rumour and gossip service. I think my Dad paid 48p per minute for me listening to see what Peter Burrowes had to say!
He retired a couple of decades ago but took on a voluntary role in the Addicks’ press office, and was also a long time contributor to the matchday programme right up until the final game of last season.
There really wasn’t much he didn’t do at Charlton, except may be play.
A proper Charlton legend. Sleep well Peter, and next time I ring ClubCall I expect you to answer.

Very sad news and I’ve had the pleasure of many chats with Peter….a Charlton man through and through and will be fondly remembered by all who knew him….RIP Peter
