Charlton Athletic 1 Preston North End 2

Apologies for another delay on my post match thoughts. I was at The Valley again yesterday and again had to drown my sorrows afterwards.

This morning I woke with my stomach churning and that was not due to the late night Brick Lane curry.

I will put it out there. I am nervous now. I was never one that thought this season was cut and dried, I was still habitually looking behind us and not above us, yet it is still in our hands but we need to take this season by the scruff of the neck. Soon.

Again, I thought we played okay yesterday, pretty well in parts, but we are locked in a pattern of errors and bad judgement calls, especially at home.

Team news was that Clarke missed out due to injury and Fevrier played in his place. JRC also started instead of concussion protocolled Coady. Leaburn, Godden, Kelman, Berry and Fullah were all on the bench.

The start to the game yesterday was enthralling. Docherty had a fierce volley just over in the opening minute closely followed by a Mannion saved and then JRC hit the post. The Valley was up but the game was very open.

Carey had a shot blocked and TC had one saved before a long throw from Carey found JRC via a Preston head, and he fired home. 18 minutes on the clock and we had a dream start.

We were on the front foot, and the Covered End was enjoying itself until Jones got himself in a muddle and gave away a throw. From that a cross was headed in by Dobbin and suddenly were back level. Jones went down for a period later in that half, he continued but I felt he was less assured yesterday.

That Preston goal switched the momentum, and the visitors cheered on by a sea of bowler hats, finished the half the stronger.

The beginning of the 2nd half did not mirror the first and we were sluggish, unable to string any positive moves together and Jones surprisingly replaced JRC with Fullah and less surprisingly Godden was introduced for Chambers. Immediately I noticed a far better connectivity between Dykes and Godden, who has to start next week.

However an error from Fullah saw Preston break quickly, something we never do, and Potts finished within seconds of the turnover in our own half.

Once again we found ourselves behind at home and having to chase the game.

For 15 minutes we threw the kitchen sink at them, and in fairness to PNE, they defended like a promotion place depended on it.

Godden was buzzing everywhere, Dykes was throwing himself at everything, Carey was getting shots off, crosses were coming in from Fevrier and TC but we couldn’t get the point that would still have been very valuable.

Deep in injury time Dykes came the closest with a goalbound close range shot that was remarkably blocked by a defender.

No knocking the effort, and Jones and the players were clapped off, but we badly need to find some quality that will finally prove that we deserve to be here.

🎙️“We only had to put enough quality into the box in the last 15 minutes because we had so many bodies in there, plus size and movement. But we didn’t. We either hit it too hard or we had three set-plays right at the end where we hit the near post twice and then we clipped it to the edge of the box, which could have cost us. We didn’t have enough quality in the final third. Is that decisions or personnel? We need to be better.” – Nathan Jones

It was just one of those days where a a player either walked under a ladder or broke a mirror before playing…..everything was positive but we just can’t get the goals we need and when we did we let PNE get into the game.
We can’t fault the effort but tactically we fell short again letting PNE players run at us without an early challenge !!!!!
I’m gettingva little worried now and facing Sheffield Wednesday next is worrying….
COYRs……please please get the points so I can relax a bit !!!

Everything went against us yesterday including the other results & it’s unfortunately getting the same desperate feel of the end of our last Championship season. IMO Jones has worked wonders with the quality put at his disposal & I wouldn’t want anyone else in charge for the last few games when we need to grind something out through determination & passion.
If we can just get those 3-4 points we need to get over the line then hopefully the board will back him to rebuild with the quality we need next season.

Like you CA I too are getting very nervous for the first time this season in recent weeks we’ve kept hoping we will finally get over the line, but as in previous weeks we have failed hopefully we are not going to throw away all the good work over the passed two years, at the end of the day what will be will be , let’s hope we don’t keep having to drown our sorrows coyr

Yesterday’s result cements the need for an attacking midfielder who can unlock defences…..I know that they are like gold dust, but if we can actually stay up, that will be a must for the owners to invest in for next term.
I didn’t think we played badly overall yesterday, but we must get these wrong decisions and basic mistakes out of our game.
Probably three points will see us clear, but it makes the Sheffield Wednesday game HUGE.

I know how you feel, CA.
It would seem that scoring in the first half isn’t all that it was cracked up to be! We have just got to get some more points under our belts but points are going to be very hard to win now, I fear. We may well now be relying on others to lose, which is a sorry state of affairs for us to be in.

Like everyone else, I’m getting a bit nervous now. Couldn’t attend the match yesterday, but from what I hear we played alright, but just don’t seem able to hang on in there and get that winning goal. I hope Godden can play a longer spell, as I certainly have faith in him scoring if he’s given the opportunity, we can only hope we get 3 points from some where soon and those below us stay there. Something to take away the worrying!
The bookies have us at very long odds to be relegated!25/1 or33/1 go to Odds checker and look for yourselves.
The point is that the bookies rarely get it wrong-0ccassionaly yes but mostly no!
    I am with the bookies
    Keep the faith

As always the defence should receive the plaudits and midfield/forwards finish the game with the “what if”. If the Ginger Genius doesn’t score he contributes nothing. Our wide players should look at the opposition over the last weeks as to how cross a ball into a danger area. Doc is very limited, oh for a Kins/Cullen.Dykes is trying, but has nothing around him to work with. TC promises a lot …. Our defence hopefully will be assisted by everything in front of them for the remainder of the season.🤞🏻🤞🏻

Once again we failed to take the opportunity to get three points at home. Once again we can score just one goal.
We now have four games and frankly I can see no hope of points in three of them.
The only chance is Sheff Weds away, and their form has picked up a little. Even managing a draw at Coventry yesterday. I’m not confident we can beat them.
We’re in big trouble. Will 49 points keep us up?

Well another 3pts gone i m usually a glass half full kinda guy but not anymore, I ve actually seen more fight at mecca bingo at Norwich on a Friday night with the oaps collecting their prizes than this shower of sxxt excuse the language CA I m extremely sorry guys but I think Sheffield Wednesday will beat us as everybody else has they had a decent result on saturday. I think we only have about 7 or 8 championship players in our squad the rest are league1 I fear we will be relegated NJ has rarely put out a formidable squad. While I m on the subject of NJ why on earth does he keep saying we’re not the best version of ourselves what does that even mean. Keep your chins up as mine is completely down at the moment. COYR
