Headphones Norm RIP

What absolutely devastating news. šŸ’”

On a day which should have been about celebration and memories, we lost one of our own in such tragic circumstances.

Just 12 minutes into the game at home to Portsmouth, 33 years and 1 day after our return to The Valley, the game was halted and later abandoned as medics and supporters rushed to aid a fan in the Covered End.

A mate of mine was pretty close and said it was awful as fans took it in turns to help medics give CPR to a fan, which we now know was the legendary supporter Headphones Norman.

I think I was a kid when I first remember seeing Norm at matches. He was pretty recognizable dressed in a sleeveless jacket covered in badges, always a hat whatever the weather and his trademark oversized pair of headphones wrapped around his head.

Every away game, every home game, Norm would be there. When you saw Norm at an away game you know you were not alone.

That Covered End in the Sky is sadly getting quite crowded, but what a noise those wonderful characters are making.

My heartfelt condolences go to his family and friends. Go well, Norm and rest in peace fellow Addick ā¤ļø.

I went to see Malvern Town FC 5 play against Tavistock 1 today, but instead of wearing anything Malvern Town related, I took my Charlton Athletic Hat.
It was out of respect for the fact that at The Valley Today, The Game got stopped and then abanded, #due to a Medical emergency in the Crowd in Charlton’s Covered end stand very early into the game. The Stewards acted quickly and administered CPR. The person Known to all Charlton Supporters as Headphones Norm, and despite best efforts, sadly Norm passed away. He had been supporting Charlton for more than 35 years and never seemed to miss a match home or away.
He was so recognisable, and virtually every one Knew him. He was also made supporter of the year last year.
I had taken some photos of Him , I think at Walsall quite a few years back, and saw him at another away game, and told him that I had some good shots of him. He asked me why I had taken them, and told him that he was such a photogenic Character, and He thanked me for taking them. Always a gentleman
A very sad day for his family, but hope they can find some Solace that he passed away doing what he liked best. An Incredible Supporter and I,m sure that somewhere at the Valley, perhaps a special Mural could be commissioned which Norms Trademark Hat, Jacket and Headphones.

Very sad day at The Valley and Norm.was Charlton fan through and through and such a funny and polite person.
It was the right and proper decision in my humble opinion to abandon the game as all fans ,players and would be saddened to hear about his passing.
Credit to all the stewards, medics and Porsrmouth fans who showed sympathy and understanding this afternoon.
I’m sure a tribute to Norm.will happen Tuesday night when Boro visit.
Rest in peace Norm and my thoughts go out to family and friends of such gentleman.

If that did happen Peter that chant was appalling and and hang your heads in shame Pompey fans who chanted that….

I used to go to a lot of away games in the 90s when up north as a student. Even back in the pre-Premier League years when there were far fewer Charlton fans travelling. Norman was always there come rain or shine. On the rare occasions I’ve been to away games in recent years, Norm was still there — 30 years on. I don’t think there was ever a more dedicated Charlton supporter. A real character. RIP Norm.

I was a kid when my big brother began to take me over to Selhurst Park for our ‘home games’, and that was when I used to see Norm. As you say, always recognisable, with those headphones and badges. He appeared to be a genuinely positive character, and one whose presence will be sorely missed at The Valley.

At the game, I was quite emotional anyway, with it being the anniversary of our return home. It was stirring a fair few memories of that day in 1992 (which I was lucky enough to be at). The only comfort I can take for Norm, is that he was in a place he loved, surrounded by his CAFC family.

    Rest in Power Norm x

Like many I didn’t know Norman personally, just a nodding aquaintence. Truly a character and dedicated supporter. Desperately sad at his passing.
Hopefully the club will arrange a tribute for him at a home game and invite his family to witness it.
Tusdays game may come a little too early. So perhaps Oxford on the 20th?

Just another CAFC fan who didn’t know Norm personally but always saw him in the days when I used to regularly travel to away games, and of course around The Valley. We may well have wondered what he was listening to on those giant headphones, but for our little crowd it was the huge bunch of keys hanging from his waistband that fascinated us; how did he remember what each key was for! A very, very sad day yesterday as an icon amongst Charlton supporters sadly passed – RIP Norm.

What was very telling amongst the football community was the condolences posted by clubs and supporters up and down the country, with Millwall being one of the first to reach out. I didn’t hear the Pompey fans chants or songs whilst we were waiting for news as I was down on the concourse talking to some fellow supporters. Unfortunately, every club seems to have an unsavoury minority as on my train home I was sitting opposite two Pompey supporters who were in full agreement that the game should have been called off and they weren’t heading just back to Portsmouth but all the way to Yeovil a long and expensive day out for those two gentlemen but without complaining.

What more could CAFC have done, only in my opinion, better communication with the fans. There were long gaps between one announcement to the next with many in the ground getting restless e.g. I have heard, but haven’t seen confirmation, that the EFL was one party that had to have input as to whether the game would continue. This could have been relayed over the PA system, and if still waiting update on that a short while after.

I am sure it was difficult to relay information not knowing the worsening situation, but the club should have done a better job of updating fans (in news is still news) even without EFL input of not knowing the situation without medics being in the stadium if the game could be restarted.

I concur with Peter Fawn, the songs coming from the Portsmouth ā€˜fans’ was appalling and they should be ashamed of themselves. I was in the North Stand a tier above where it all happened. RIP Norm a Charlton Legend

I wasn’t there but I have been told by many others that some Pompey fans’ songs and chanting was atrocious.

On the socials there has been a lot of support from the footballing community and Portsmouth and their fans, but sadly there are always some thicko idiots.

Just a sad day.. I often spoke to Headphones Norm and we talked about how the team was going and our thoughts about players. It was a match day acquaintance, but he was always appreciative and I found him to be very genuine man.
I was extremely disappointed by the section of Pompey fans with their comments and vandalism. I know some Pompey fans and they were embarrassed by this group of teenagers who apparently had an appetite for causing trouble. It was a sad day all around.. I will be bringing my headphones for Tuesday night.. RIP Norm.. you’re a legend and will sorely missed.

    Another Valley

    Fear nothing all you Addicks,
when you reach those pearly gates:
For when life’s final whistle blows
    endless extra time awaits.

There’s a Valley up in heaven,
    a truly awesome football ground,
with a green pitch in the middle
    and red seats all around.

It’s where the Charlton legends play,
and past fans watch and cheer.
The covered end choir is in good voice:
Who could not like it here?

If you want to, you can play a bit,
or just sit there and sing.
The red red robin is always bobbin’,
and the mist’s always rolling in.

    The final whistle never blows
and the ref is always right.
    Palace and Millwall never win:
    This is truly paradise.
