Coventry City 3 Charlton Athletic 1

The Addicks went down to a fourth consecutive defeat today, and that’s 11 goals conceded in a week, just one less than in all the 15 games prior.

It was better though, I felt like the spirit was back, and the first half hour lifted hopes that those first 15 games were not an apparition.

Amari’i Bell started in a back four with Coventry and Carey ahead of them, TC, Knibbs and Bree behind Olaofe.

Bell’s presence immediately gave us balance and visibly more competency. The formation, 4-2-3-1, looked solid, but allowed us to break with pace.

It was solid opening from us and on 14 minutes we won a free-kick out on the right. TC tried to make something of it, but the ball fell to Knibbs who calmly slotted home to give the Addicks an unexpected lead.

What was noticeable after that was how our confidence was lifted. We were pressing, winning second balls and defending man for man. We were also getting men quickly into the box when either Olaofe, Knibbs or TC broke.

The game suddenly became very open as we went toe to toe with the runaway leaders. Kaminski made a great save but then in a five minute spell Lloyd Jones had a header cleared off the line, Tanto was denied from an angle and then TC blasted across the goal just inches from Tanto’s outstretched boot.

In all of that Bell could have been sent off, and have given a penalty away, but it was end to end stuff and this was the Charlton side that we had witnessed up until the last few games.

However, that all changed on the half hour as Bell went down and wasn’t able to continue. That changed the whole game and I do think Tanto being forced back into a deeper role eliminated his strengths and reduced our ability to break with pace. Leaburn is always going to look to play with his back to goal. I know it was probably round pegs and square holes on the bench but I do think Jones could’ve found a better fit.

We were visibly shaken and looked unprepared for Bell to pull up injured. Coventry smelt trouble and sure enough two quick goals (again) swung the pendulum before half-time.

The 2nd half Coventry patiently kept the ball waiting for an opportunity to extend their lead and we had to rely on the odd break, but did not have the quality to hurt them.

Carey had our best chance at 2-1, he got himself into an excellent position to collect the ball from Leaburn but blasted just over.

At 2-1 there is always a chance but a 3rd Coventry goal killed the game off on 77 minutes. They also hit the post.

We have finally made it to the end of this week, but it feels like we’ve been run over by a juggernaut. Time for a big reset, and to remind ourselves that for 30 minutes we held our own against a team who will be up by Easter.

We also have to hope Bell just needs a modern day magic sponge because he showed how vital he is. Sadly we have other players who don’t look as suited to the step up to The Championship as we had hoped.

🎙️“Now we have to go into December, stem the tide and make sure we come out of that month in a significantly better position than we are now. We have to make sure we pick up points that month. We need to reboot on Monday because we have got some big games – and games we need to win.” – Nathan Jones

Agree on that CA, looked solid and dangerous on the counter until Bell was KO’d.
Pompey a must win obviously, we’ll be okay.
Great times for the NJ detractors whose feeble memories forget what life was like year after year in L1 Appleton, Holden et al.

Well I wasn’t expecting a win but the players showed improved cohesion and determination and most of all never gave up.
The roller coaster is exciting and Pompey may well see us back to normal with our fans doing their bit as usual.
I’ve followed Charlton for over 55 years and I’m very excited with the progress we have made….The Championship is a very very difficult league and I’m confident that better results will soon happen….Father Christmas has my pressie list and his elves are already sorting out wins for us 😀

Yes we lost but so much better than the previous two games. Thought we looked better as well with a bit more pace up front. Sorry to say that Leaburn, as hard as he works isn’t up to being a Championship striker. This is all very like last year when injuries in key positions derailed our progress. Can’t wait until we have a fit 11, in the right positions. We have already proven that we are going to be ok this year….which was always the target.

Yes, a much better display, and CA is right in that the same problems are there, and such a shame the injury-prone Bell, another one, and every week we are hearing about another week before all our injuries to key players
The lack of quality is obvious, and yes, that 10 or 13 points away from 2 games ok, is now only 6, and the same for the top 6, but being realistic think we can forget this, but we still aim for a lower mid-table finish would be totally acceptable.
I saw a post today that we had the same points at exactly the same time the last relegation season, and yes, again the injuries we had,
IMHO, and we all know that the close-season signings were good on paper, but also injury-prone, and we were told a lot of quality and sadly, most of them still have not produced it, and still coming up to speed.
Our best signing by far is Carey and as for Apter and a few others they have it seems to be frozen out, and it does not help not playing in their normal positions.
COYR we need some wins, and no game is easy in this league.

My Coventry mate singled out TC for praise. Interesting because he’s often unfairly singled out for criticism by Charlton fans online.

Louis Mendez often says opposing fans and reporters single him out as our most dangerous player. Funny how different people see different things.

A managerial masterclass from the Messiah! Playing away against the best team in the Championship, with no senior defender on the bench.
Bell, apparently fit again gets a start and goes down injured resulting in Leaburn coming on!
NJ signed a left sided defender Friday in the shape of Roussillion who apparently travelled with the squad. He should have been a substitute (game changer) It’s obvious. Even if not fully fit he would be a more sensible option.
A shame really, after two drubbings, we looked competitive, it was only when Bell went off, we were punished.
We have three home games in December. Seven or even nine points are essential or we’ll find ourselves very close to the danger zone
January and reinforcements can’t come soon enough

Daggs – if we get 9pts from the next 3 game, we would be in the top 6! Those three games are Pompey, Boro and Birmingham. I understand that you don’t like NJ,that’s fine that’s your opinion. The lad we signed mid-week has not played football for months, you can train what you like but being match fit is another level. So playing an unprepared player would be stupid. At least give him a game in the U21’s before exposing him to a full match in the championship.
I suspect he will be playing on Saturday , hopefully we will get 3pts. Personally I would take 5 from the next 3, but yes a win is required very soon.

Red-Army Nine points would put us in the top six only if all those above us get significantly less. I rather doubt we’ll achieve nine.
Rousillion has apparently been training with us for some time. I fail to understand how is therefore not fit, but one under 21 match he suddenly becomes fit!
Taking no senior defender to Coventry was the stupid part.

Daggs.. he will have a level of fitness but clearly he was assessed as not ready enough for the sub bench. Travelling with the squad is fine to make them part of the match day set up. Players train and get to a level of fitness, playing a professional level match sharpens that fitness. The guy hasn’t played football since June. We have to trust the coaching staff who are assessing him, they will advise NJ. Which senior defender did you have in mind from our current playing squad ?
