Addicks and World Cup play-off’s

It wasn’t a surprise that Lyndon Dykes was called up this week for the Scotland squad, who play friendlies against Japan at Hampden Park on Saturday and then take on fellow World Cup qualifiers Ivory Coast at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium next Tuesday.

What wasn’t a surprise was the lack of a call up for Conor Coventry from Ireland and Lloyd Jones from Craig Bellamy of Wales as those two nations enter a huge week in the World Cup play-offs.

Not season defining

I’m glad that you guys, at least the ones that commented, had similar feelings to me after yesterday’s game.

I went on Charlton Life post match and there appeared a lot more pessimism, maybe that stemmed from disappointment or a sudden realization that we are sliding down the table, but I try to look for indicators and study body language, and it was a different team to the one that subsided on Tuesday night.

Coventry City 3 Charlton Athletic 1

The Addicks went down to a fourth consecutive defeat today, and that’s 11 goals conceded in a week, just one less than in all the 15 games prior.

It was better though, I felt like the spirit was back, and the first half hour lifted hopes that those first 15 games were not an apparition.

I was at The Valley today, and I was moved by that performance and how it was saluted by a pulsating stadium.

We were irresistible in that 2nd half and thoroughly deserved the win in what was possibly the best pressing display I’ve seen from us under Nathan Jones.

We were going to lose at some point, and if you’re going to lose, then lose like that.

It was another excellent display of sheer determination, aggressive pressing and quality not only matching but eclipsing our exalted opponents, but the winning goal was straight out of the Premier League and separated the two teams.

Wow. This team does not know when to give up.

We deserved something from the game, but as the clocked ticked onto 90 minutes, hope appeared to have left the stadium, yet the 11 yellow shirted Addicks had definitely not.

I am still bitterly disappointed about that. Just a couple of months ago I was sitting through games nonplussed, today I found myself fully invested. I presume that is a good thing, but that was two points thrown away.

Blackpool probably deserved their drew on the balance of chances, and in the cold light of day it was a good point, but a few hours later and I’m still in a state of annoyance.

Disappointed not to win that. It has been rare this season when we haven’t won when we really deserved to, so I’ll take that as a positive.

Reading have also been on a good run, and had chances themselves especially in the 1st half, but we grew into the game and more than shaded it.

Conor Coventry

I only just noticed that Conor Coventry was a (very) late call up to the Republic of Ireland’s squad for the game against England at Wembley yesterday. He was an unused sub.

Coventry qualifies for the Republic through his Mum and actually holds the record for their most capped player at U21 level making 28 appearances.

We just weren’t at it today. I thought we poor with the ball and once again lacked decisiveness and bravery when in possession.

Our first league defeat and goals conceded, sadly in front of a large travelling support.

Credit where credit is due. Andy Scott sweet talked Conor Coventry into signing for Charlton on Wednesday night after his talks with Sheffield Wednesday stalled predominantly over a sell-on fee.

This looks a considerable upgrade on other signings under this management group, so welcome to the other side of the Blackwell Tunnel, Conor.

Have we won the race for Conor Coventry?

Charlton appear to have won the race to sign West Ham’s Conor Coventry pipping Sheffield Wednesday to his permanent signature. The midfielder had a medical at the training ground today.

Jim Rodwell excused Andy Scott at last night’s fan meeting saying he was away convincing a player to sign, and it looks as if may have pulled it off.
