Hull City 1 Charlton Athletic 1

7 points in a week that ended with a long schlep up the east coast is a terrific return and today once again the Addicks did just not know when to give it up.

A late Luke Berry goal from a copybook James Bree corner gave us a deserved point.

Unusually Jones rang the changes, but less surprising after watching us at Preston. Bree and Coventry were rested for Apter and Knibbs. Olaofe and Kelman were rotated for Tuesday’s game changers’ Leaburn and Campbell.

We started on fire with Apter at the crux of it and we created a couple of really good chances. TC twice coming close.

Hull then got on top and rattled off a number of corners, but the score remained goalless at the half.

Just a minute into the 2nd half their lead came about due to Gillesphey overplaying it on the edge of our box and Gelhardt won the ball, entered the box and fired home.

Jones changed it not long after with Bree, Coventry and Kelman entering the play. Carey played more forward as a 10 and instantly we looked more threatening.

TC had a header wide, but with Hull sat back content to hit us on the break, an equalizer didn’t look like coming.

Yet, I love that this team just leaves it all out there and never knows when it’s beaten. With the clock moving into injury time debutant Hernández was on and Lloyd Jones was playing as an extra striker.

Bree sent in a corner asking to be touched home, and it’s Luke Berry who did with his chest in front of the ecstatic travelling Addicks.

Despite being quick out of the blocks, we did look tired, but were competitive throughout. Despite the changes I think we kept our defensive solidity and it was tough one for MoW between Ramsey and Jones.

🎙️“I’m super proud of the character and super proud of the game changers that came on that really wanted to get that game back, and we did, so I’m so, so happy in terms of that. 7 points in a Championship week, with two away games in there, is a wonderful haul.” – Nathan Jones

Yes, CAFC keeps going to the end and it appears an entertaining game, and wow 4 changes.
Both sides had chances, and Crickey, how many chances did Campbell have, and a mixture of bad luck.
Well done everyone at CAFC and well the supporters top notch, as always.

Let’s not underestimate the tremendous achievement of getting 7 points out of those 3 games.. 2 being away against teams 1 being a home fortress for an ex PL team, the other who freely scores goals at home. We are newly promoted team with a budget in fraction to those who were promoted and even less than those who came down from the PL.
So we all should appreciate the achievement of what this team has achieved in being in the top 6 at the quarter mark, when many predicted we would be in the bottom 6 or lower.
The game today was a tough game for the team, after the excursions of Tuesday. We dug into our squad, difficult for Apter and Knibbs has both have not played a lot of football.
Bree’s delivery was high quality.. again, the anticipation of Berry comes from experience and once again has delivered for the team. We were not our fluent self but that is not surprising. Gillispie was at fault but we can’t be critical of him given his performances over the last few games. TC will split opinions, but I believe he will deliver and the last few games has shown more ability at this level, our strikers will get better as well.
We have something here and I hope we can get behind the team and help them. The goal still remains survival in the championship, anything else is a bonus and should be celebrated.
I am looking forward to the rest of the season, there will be downs, but at the moment I not seeing to many gremlin teams out there.
We will review again after Christmas, as then it is the business end of season. But I remain hopeful that this squad will not let us down. I hope we can add Bree to our squad.

Isn’t it just wonderful to have a team and a manager that you can rely on to keep fighting, no matter what the odds?

Another good result in a very successful eight days. A shame Gillesphey made that one mistake. Overall a draw probably a fair result.
No doubt I’ll be accused of moaning. But TC ! Dropped to the bench V Ipswich. Straight back in V Hull. Picked up where he left off. Three chances all squandered………

Fans can be really happy and I’m impressed to see a squad capable of never never giving up and I’m delighted for Berry a well executed header…we can’t rest in our laurels and I’m sure Jones has already instilled it into the players..
We will have ups and downs as all teams do but the achievements already are very very impressive.

Great result again. I would take a point at Hull all day long. Once again we didn’t die and deserved the goal late on. In my opinion Apter has to play, he brings so much more to the side with his positivity. TC again is a conundrum, and the debate goes on. Gillesphey must be forgiven for his mistake, given his performances in the last six months. So, back to The Valley to entertain Swansea. COYR.

          As a left sided striker?

I ask as I have no idea where he plays currently either, but would like to see him get more minutes.

Yes CA, why not…..he’s likely to get more goals from there than TC at the moment. Is quick enough to beat defenders on the inside or outside and if I remember correctly, played as a winger, not a wing back for Blackpool. Give him a go there I say.

You make a good argument. Also good with his left foot.

Well, and my belief too, and even before I heard The Charlton Chronicles, why on earth did Jones (or was it him) sign Apter, who is a winger, and yes, see these days they are classed as a wing-back and the same as Campbell a winger.
Also, Apter can play with both feet and on the left-hand side, and when substituted on Saturday, he went straight down the tunnel.
I have stated before a few times wow betide if one has a falling out with Jones and he never forgets and do not forget the other year on May, and towards the end of the season left him on the bench or dragged him off quite early!!

Such a shame and yes, all Managers do have their favourites, but why sign wingers who are not played in their proper positions?
Saying this I am not knocking Jones, and without him and May, the other year we could well have been relegated to the bottom tier.
Regarding Bree I doubt whether we will be able to sign him because of his wages, and yet there are rumours that we are still looking at this Japanese player who is a winger!!!

We looked tired and that was with four changes…but that underlines what hard work this division is and how you need to be switched on for the full 97 minutes…three hard matches in a week, two of them away and our physical style of play takes its toll. We play without the ball really well but that means a lot of energy being expended on getting back behind the ball, crowding the midfield and defence areas and pressing hard against attackers. There are only so many miles you can run….

Maybe yesterday I would have started with Tanto Olaofe who should be fresh with just one start this season, albeit that was midweek.

But NJ has decided to pair him with Charlie Kelman while we have TC and Leaburn as the alternative forward line. In which case he possibly didn’t play Tanto because he wanted to rest Charlie Kelman?

We have another conundrum with Rob Apter, he looks good going forward and adds some creativity but he’s a bit positionally weak when doing the defensive side as a right-wing back. How do we crowbar him into the side while not giving him too much to do defensively?

Still, sixth in the table and everything is gelling nicely, we are ahead of where most people thought we’d be after 11 games and comfortably ahead of Birmingham and Wrexham who I mention because they were promoted with us, as a form guide that’s a useful yardstick.

Apter did pretty well defensively yesterday against Ryan Giles. He’s a tricky customer.

I agree with you CA, Apter, considering he has mainly previously been played as winger and has not had to do much defensive duties, has done quite well defending and has the speed to get back, whereas Bree, who again is good going forward and is excellent with dead ball kicks, has not been quite so good at defending.
Brownie also noticed that in the last few games he started and did comment on it.
In fact if you saw when Apter was early replaced in the second half he wasn’t too happy when he came off and I don’t blame him as he was dropped when he had been playing well and in this game was putting a lot of effort in, both going forward and defending when certain others were struggling a bit, to keep up as it was a hard game so quick after the previous one at Ipswich. Also agree on various view why Apter cannot be given a start, instead of TC on the left, as he has shown he can cross and shoot with both feet and can hit the target. So maybe even start with Apter on the left and Bree on the right, as you would then have plenty of crosses coming from both sides, for either Leaburn or Olafe to latch onto?
I can also see NJ’s thought, of this time, starting Leaburn and TC together, instead of Kelman and Olafe, but just couldn’t understand why Olafe didn’t even get on at all, considering how well he had done the previous week?
Plus Knibbs IMO was a really big disappointment, he looked slow and quite a few times didn’t put in any real effort to chase back when losing the ball. I thought he would have really wanted to put a shift in, to prove to NJ he should be in the team starting, but it really was no different to him coming on as a sub, very lack lustre performance. Anderson would have been a better choice, if Coventry needed a rest, as at least he gives his all and puts players under pressure, albeit his final ball needs to be improved.
Anyway overall a very good result as it was a hard point earned and a draw was a fair result in the end and it’s now onto a home game at last. So lets hope they can give a good showing and a convincing win, as with most teams, its the home wins that are more important to the majority of fans who come along to watch and support their team to keep them coming back!
