Kanu moves to Walsall on loan

20-year old striker Daniel Kanu has joined Walsall on a season-long loan. I peg this as a really important move for Dan. Hopefully he gets plenty of game time leading to him being a real threat in League Two for The Saddlers.

Nathan Asiimwe clearly benefited from his time under Mat Sadler and Nathan Jones and his coaching team must trust their peers at Walsall.

I forget that Kanu is still only 20, but he has already appeared 71 times for the club after making his debut at 17 in February 2022.

Good luck Dan.

That means we now have the following players out on loan:

  • Daniel Kanu, age 20 at Walsall, L1
  • Alex Mitchell, age 23 at Plymouth L1
  • Kaheim Dixon, age 20 at Crawley Town L2
  • Gassan Ahadme, age 24 at Stevenage L1
  • Nathan Asiimwe, age 20 at AFC Wimbledon L1
  • Terry Taylor, age 24 at Northampton Town L1

I agree with sending him out if he is not going to play, but two points cannot understand firstly, if he is being loaned out why not a 1st division club rather than a 2nd divsion club when apparently several 1st divsion club have been after his services, plus he has had had quite a bit of game time playing in this division, so doesn’t make sense to now drop a league lower, especially if recalled it would be for the Championship, two leagues higher! Second cannot also understand why Jones wants to keep MBick ahead of Kanu, as quite honestly everytime he has come on last season he has looked really out of his depth including at the playoff final, so cannot see how he would suddenly be better playing in a higher league? Surely it would have been better to loan him out to get some game time playing with Seniors in division two first, which Assime has done!

Could it be because he is more likely to get game time?

I think the reasoning behind Kanu, A Mitchell, Dixon and Asiimwe going out and not players Mwamba, Rylah, Mbick and Z Mitchell is that the former need games, but the latter still need developing.

I really hope that Kanu, Asiimwe & Dixon have really good seasons at their respective loan clubs, so that they come back stronger, and knocking on the door of our first team.

I also recognise that with any degree of success that the club has, there is a tendency to recruit players of a higher calibre or already proven at the level, which makes it harder to blood those younger players here.

As a fan, I always love having that element of homegrown talent on the pitch!

Seems a retrograde step for Kanu. I don’t expect him to remain with Charlton.
Have to agree with ‘Mick’ about M’Bick. When I’ve seen him he doesn’t look to be anywhere good enough for our level.
