Charlton Athletic 1 Wycombe Wanderers 0

A magical night at The Valley, plenty of sore heads and rasping voices this morning.

A remarkable achievement to get to this point, and The Valley last night was a special place.

It was another tense and tight game, but with 81 minutes on the clock Matt Godden grabbed the all important goal, and we never missed a beat after that.

A controlled and magnificent performance all across the park, with Nathan’s game-changers too helping carry the team to victory.

I’ll write more once I’ve shaken this headache and spent the day watching video’s of the celebrations.

Godden again olé olé.

Another classic under the lights. My fourth playoff semi. My favourite is still the Ipswich one, so many years ago now.

I was in attendance thanks to a tipoff about the likely availability of returned tickets 😉

Wonderful scenes at the Valley last night. As I live in Ireland hope there will be a chance to get a ticket. I only usually get to see them about 5 times a season. Don’t wanna this the final. Come on you reds!!!

    Cheers

      Very kind Rob, thank you.

Two very stressful watches weren’t they. Incredible to see The Valley like that again.

if you can play to crowds, and keep your virtue, or play with the Kings nor lose the common touch, if neither Millwall or Crystal Palace can hurt you, if all teams count with you, but none too much, if you can feel the 90 minutes with distance run, yours is the division and every team that’s in it, which is more, you’ll be an addict, my son apologies,Rudyard Kipling

I haven’t although I did hear that RD put The Valley and Sparrows Lane into a trust for his kids.

A great night, a late finish to the day (3AM before I got to bed) and a sore throat this morning.

We Charlton fans don’t get much to boast about, but we do get nights like yesterday with a full Valley and a Wembley final to look forward to. Plus the obligatory post-match pitch invasion and fans chanting to each other – some on the pitch, the rest in the Covered End. After I left the ground I could hear the noise from several hundred metres away. Was it worth the late night, the sore throat and dull headache? Of course it was.

I got inside the ground at 7PM not because I wanted to miss the fan-zone but to just watch the ground slowly fill up from around 200/300 fans when I arrived to a near capacity 25,700. I wish I had a time lapse camera or something to have recorded it and also the noise when Matty Godden scored, the roof nearly came off the stadium. I have never heard that level of noise ever, and the Valley probably hasn’t either, at least not since the Who gigs there.

Even better I twisted my friend’s arm to take his son along (it was a school night and he was in two minds), so there’s one great and lasting family memory created right there.

I also got to meet and have a chat with Bob Bolder about the Leeds play-off final at St Andrews all those years ago.

On to Wembley, but I think I’ll give it a day or two before I start running through how I’ll get my ticket and what might happen on the day.

I’m taking it easy today and in meetings until 5PM in case you’re wondering where I am.

I can’t remember the last time the valley was rocking like that we was definitely the 12th man last night all the players put in a great shift as Wycombe put us under a bit of pressure I think we will see better passing football at Wembley as orient like to play the ball on the ground not in the air

roll on next Sunday could end up a very drunken bank holiday

Wow, what a pleasure to see and hear The Valley full and rocking again, and what a cracking result. I thought the defence were stupendous all game, even putting bodies on the line a couple of times. I must admit though, I thought we were very light in attack, and Campbell hasn’t been his electric self over either of the two legs, and a team total of only two shots on target needs improvement. Orient will be a different kettle of fish, which worries me a little. As I said in a previous post (May 10th) they break quickly, and have of course, the leagues top scorer in Kelman. With the space on the Wembley pitch, they will be serious contenders as they play a good passing game. So COYR’s.

Well the game was no classic. However it didn’t matter. One goal scored at the right time and Wembley here we come.

In the past I’ve been openly critical of N Jones. If we all dare to remember, up untill December the team were looking very poor. I was more concerned about relegation than play offs.

Last night as the goal went in and again at the final whistle, we all saw what it meant to NJ. He was truly moved.

He has taken us further than I and many others dared to dream. Just one more step.

Thanks Nathan, it seems you are the Messiah.

It will be impossible to issue bans for all the fans who invaded the pitch at the end….but it is a criminal offence…..that poor guy hopefully will escape a ban….
