Phil Chapple

Early last summer I match-made Luke Berry and Dan Potts together with Nathan Jones, and this year I’m going to plump for a future commingling of Nathan Jones and Phil Chapple.

Chapple has a very good reputation in the game as a scout and from his previous jobs in player recruitment, and he has just left Luton Town following their relegation.

Chapple spent five years at Charlton in the mid-90’s as a player, making 142 appearances. He was shall we say an old fashioned centre-half and Curbs had a disposition for throwing him up front when we were chasing games.

He played a lot of games in our 1997/98 play-off season before being given a free transfer when he moved to Peterborough. It was at Posh he started scouting once he packed up playing.

Chapple was head of first-team recruitment at Stoke, hired by Jones, who then took him to Luton when Jones moved back to Kenilworth Road.

Jones first knew him when they were at Charlton together, in fact Chapple worked as chief scout at The Valley for more than eight years. He went on to be senior scout at Fulham and scored a plum job as Brighton and Hove Albion’s European scout.

Charlton are obviously without anyone leading recruitment and Gavin Carter said the other night at the CAST webinar that that an appointment to Head of Recruitment was imminent.

You could be onto something there.

Our recruitment has been poor over the last few years, especially with loanees, having someone with some knowledge and contacts across the UK and Europe can only make that decision making process better.

It’s written in the stars mate, the only question is….. as the Head of Recruitment or as the Technical Director?

On another matter, next season’s shirt sponsor to be announced on Thursday which will be interesting plus new stadium sponsor soon after …. I’m hoping for The O2 Valley, short and unfussy

Dear old Phil Chapple. A good servant to CAFC as a player, but without bitching to much, he became known as the wardrobe for his lack of mobility 🙂

I hope his scouting is a little more maneouverable. 🙂

🤣. I think we knew him as Bambi on ice. Remember seeing him thrown up front on a brisk evening match and he looked so ungainly.

Always remember him playing at Ipswich with a bandage round his head on the day that Leaburn Snr. scored his hat trick. He was no chapel of rest.
