Charlton Athletic 3 Burton Albion 1
4th place finish then. We might not have won anything to this point, but applause 👏 all round to Nathan Jones, his staff, the players and all of those Addicks that have backed them home and away all season long.
Together the journey will continue.
The sun beamed, 20,000 Addicks sung and smiled and at one end we had people dressed as bananas. It was a good day to be at The Valley, it weren’t bad sat in Florida on the sofa.
Lloyd Jones, Thierry Small, Luke Berry and Will Mannion sat this one out and Coventry, Campbell and Godden were sacrificed early.
I thought all of the players that came into the side, and those that came on did well especially the latest on the academy assembly line Micah Mbick and Ibrahim Fullah.
A word for Alex Mitchell. It was a dreadful error for their goal and he looked shaky until making a great tackle and playing in Watson who did equally well to send Godden clear to brilliantly equalize.
After that Mitchell was excellent and his teammates showed what togetherness there is when he was roundly acclaimed after he headed in our third.
In between we were too good for Burton, Godden scored a second fashioned all of his own doing, and a couple more 2nd half goals would not have flattered us.
I was almost glad we lost last week, because this game allowed us to enjoy it, rest some players and gave us a platform to bounce back.
Onwards and upwards. COYR.

Results elsewhere worked out for us and meant we get the coveted home leg of the play-off semis after the away game and against a team that have lost three on the spin just when they had an automatic spot in their sights. One of those defeats being a 4-0 home monstering inflicted by us. Will Wycombe or their fans want to face us again? Whereas our confidence levels feel high and there’ll be a sold-out Valley for the home game.
Yesterday we got to have a bit of fun in a match that didn’t really matter, the play-off spot was guaranteed, we couldn’t get second so there wasn’t much to do except avoid red cards and injuries. I hope Alex Mitchell has now got the mistake out of his system. In recent matches Nathan Jones has preferred Tom McIntyre over him and with Lloyd Jones not fully fit we will need him to step up at some point. You can make that kind of mistake against Burton but not in the play-offs. Other than that he did play well and the conveyor belt of academy talent saw Ibrahim Fuller make his debut and all but score with his first touch.
The fun part of the season starts here…
I’d rather have have Wycombe than Leyton Orient or Stockport in the semis. Although we’ll have to face one of them eventually. The kick off times are not very convenient though for those of us coming from far away.
Any idea of what is happening with Thierry Small, Lloyd Jones and Luke Berry, I assume they will all be available for the playoffs?
I was pleased that Alex Mitchell scored the third goal as it countered the error he made for the Burton goal. I think it also proved that he could be used as an emergency target man if we need to bolster our attack when chasing the game. Fullah looked very comfortable when he came on and nearly scored. But I don’t think that Kanu and Mbick offered any significant threat. Both are coming back from long periods on the side lines and need competitive minutes. I frankly would rather have the option of Mitchell if Jones is fit to resume as the CH. I thought that Ramsey and Edwards played well and Watson’s pass for the first goal was sublime. Godden had his best game for us let’s hope he can maintain his present form for the play-offs.
A very positive outcome and resting key players was a priority for Nathan. We were comfortable and I think Gary Bowyer and his players could play a match without worrying about a result.
Wycombe next Sunday will be another hurdle to overcome and we must not take if for granted we can win….we need to get another and boss the game before they visit us.
Big big credit to the covered end who did us proud and it was funny to hear the Burton fans singing “We’re winning away, how s*** must you be we are winning away” after they scored.Credit to them as they supported their team all through the game..
