Charlie Methven to leave club

The scalpel was again taken to Charlton’s senior management board today with the announcement that CEO Charlie Methven has stepped down and will leave the club.

In a carefully worded statement Methven thanks a load of people including Gavin Carter, Paul Elliot and Nathan Jones but not Jim Rodwell, who I imagine is currently typing into AI his leaving letter.

Methven claims successes, as he has continually done from his time with Sunderland, and he has, despite his often denial, been a heavy influence at the club since he arrived in June, 2023.

It was as tough initiation and Methven took a lot of stick, but there have been many clear improvements off the pitch, and on which I am sure will be in his resume as he heads to his next gig.

Less than a year ago Methven became CEO for the upcoming season, which still has three months to run.

Whether he left or was pushed will be theorized but what is certain is the owner-investor group have made a lot of key changes overseen by Gavin Carter in recent months.

Methven was an owner, remember, with a 5% share, which will cost him this season, and the question is whether he was bought out or still remains a shareholder.

As always Addicks will wait for the next episode of this forever docuseries.

UPDATE: Charlie Methven will leave the club in May to run Mount Pleasant, the Addicks’ partner academy club in Jamaica, and an associated sports investment fund based in the US (per Richard Crawley).

Timing suggests the latter but either way, seems well orchestrated by the club and an ownership group with a vision being shaped by Carter and NJ as opposed to the guys telling them what they wanted to hear to suit their own objectives.

Agree also, looks like JR next in line for the bullet.

Hopefully this is all positive and nothing destabilises the immediate priority. With Wycombe and Wrexham playing each other at the weekend, not inconceivable that the gap to top 2 could be down to 3 pts by Sunday.

I too am assuming that Global Football Partners have sanctioned this and I’m hoping they have a CEO with experience of running either a football club and/or a reasonably large sporting organisation primed to take over. We have had no news on Andy Scott’s replacement either, and maybe the reason why no one has been appointed is because the owners knew that CM was on his way out. So that’s two key appointments that need filling and possibly a third if Jim Rodwell follows them out the door.

After the Michael Appleton error Nathan Jones was effectively appointed by the owners – they came over for the interviews and while I have no evidence I suspect that Will Abbott came via the same route.
