Statistical thinking

A little bit of self-indulgence here, so forgive me but I also wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for making these pages part of your regular reading, whether it is for Addicks’ opinion, my travel writings, or simply for whatever random thoughts I translate from my head to the keyboard.

For 20 years this Blog has been a diary, a sounding board, a therapist, a pain and a sanctuary, and although I’ve always said I write it primarily for myself, if no one bothered reading it, I’d have long gone back to writing a personal diary. So, thank you again, especially those that regularly comment and give it a community feel.

2024 once again saw these pages achieve record visit total’s. Up by 20% on 2023 levels, thank you again 🙏.

85% of the visits were from the UK, with the next highest readership’s coming from the USA, Spain, Australia, France, Thailand, New Zealand, Cyprus and Canada. A lot of ex-pats in there I feel.

This stat blows my mind though, and I have a very robust spam catcher, people from 143 different countries came by this Blog last year. 47 countries had more than a 100 visits each, it could be one person of course. That wealthy Addick in Monaco (106 visits). I see 👀 you..

My most read post, in fact the top two were Nathan Jones related. A Luton Town fans’ view of Nathan Jones just pipped How does Nathan Jones Play. They were written in February just after he was appointed.

If I also tell you that January was my biggest month visit wise then the clamour for disposing of Michael Appleton, plus the rumours around Jones, and of course the transfer window all supported that.

I also wrote 40 posts in January, the most of 2024 followed by June when I penned 29. Just 13 in March stumbled from my keyboard.

My most read match ‘report’ was Jones’ first win and the team’s first for 18 games. Derby away on February 27th. That post has had 4 more views than the recent 5-0 win at Northampton.

My most read non-Addicks piece was my post about my boss, who sadly and suddenly passed away in May of last year.

I appreciate you making it to the bottom of this post. You can always subscribe (down on the right hand side of the page there 👉). 425 people already do.

Thank you again, and I will give you the rest of your day back.

    Hello Chicago Addick

My name is Frank and I am from Sydney Australia. I am an avid reader of your blog and a fanatical Charlton supporter for 40 years. One of my greatest moments was visiting the Valley and watching Charlton in 2004. Thanks to the club I had seats on half way right above the journo’s. One of the greatest days of my life. Unfortunately due to my fathers sudden death 14 years ago I haven’t been able to return or travel as I also live and care for my mother who had a stroke 5 years ago. My great comfort and joy or pain sometimes is following my beloved Charlton. It is hard to get any decent coverage of Charlton matches other than Charlton TV but the time difference is an issue. I rely on your blog and match reports for updates. I love your no nonsense blogs on Charlton and your travel blogs, even though I can’t travel

Apologise for the long comment. I have my views on the current team but I might leave that for another time.

warm regards and all the best

    Frank

Us true Charlton fans appreciate your reflections, views and honest thoughts about the club we love….you are the glue that keeps us informed and together over the years.

We have had too many highs and lows since returning to The Valley…..but that’s Charlton and wouldn’t change a thing.

Keep up the great work CA !!!!

Good stuff but what I have always wondered is what you do for a living? It seems so exotic to those of us up North UK!

Alan, you have double checked that it really is VG and not some sort of deposed Nigerian Prince on the take?

I’m amazed you’ve kept it going all this time, what with a busy job and a family to take care of.

Have a great 2025 and hopefully see you again, maybe at an Addicks game!

It amazes me too, Steve. It has often been a labour of love, but also it’s been a good a distraction, a hobby, an asylum for my thoughts 😀. It’s also been a nice way to meet or interact with other Addicks, and helps keep a connection with old friends like you!

You are very fair minded and it is always a pleasure to read your posts. It makes a great change from some of the ranting and raving going on out there. On top of that, you seem to share many of my own views on CAFC.

I am 75 years old now and have been a a Charlton supporter for well over 65 of those years. I have lived in Leicester for 45 years but have still managed to get to quite a few games each season, home and away, including the ’98 and ’19 play off finals. The highlight of this season so far was to be at The Valley with two of my best friends to see us beat Birmingham. Last season It was to be at Derby with another 600 or so Addicks to see us get a win at last.

It hasn’t all been fun but it has always been interesting!

Long may it, and your posts, continue.

    COYR !!!!!

I try to keep it level headed Brian. What did Curbs used to say – don’t get too high on the highs nor too low on the lows.

You picked a couple of crackers there. I meanwhile was at Stevenage!!

Hey CA, just a quick bit of feedback. Yes the quality of your writing is right up there. You have an interesting life, and so that makes the blog work too. But most importantly in my opinion, is that you are committed to it. You always post, i can rely on you to be there. “Your work is to discover your world, and then with all of your heart give yourself to it.” (Buddha) You have certainly done that.

I see every home game and via Charlton TV and the wonders of a vpn i see most of the away games too. So i know what’s happened. But reading your report, and then the comments from others is just so much more worthwhile than the polarised drivel on social media. Keep going son, and get that book done. Come on you reds!

Again, I am humbled by everyone’s comments. Thank you, Richard.

I am that kind of person and (attempt to) demand it from others, that you are either in or not. I don’t understand doing something half heartedly. It always bewildered me that some just post a blog (or similar) just once in a while. Why?

You write really well. I look forward to your assessment of all things CAFC. Your blog & Addicks Third Division Diary are always my go to place for a more independent view of the club. I was a big fan of Drinking During the game too (RIP).

Many thanks, Ant 🙏. I miss both Drinking and Doctor Kish.
