Walsall 0 Charlton Athletic 4

Team from higher league beats lower league opposition.

But, it wasn’t quite as simple as that going into the game. Walsall have been on a really good run of form in both the league and cup’s and started as favourites. We were ripe for a giant-killing.

What materialized was a very fine win on the road for the Addicks, all four goals scored by forwards, and we put ourselves in the hat for the 3rd Round for only the second time in eight L1 seasons.

Jones put out a strong team. 4-4-2 with the only change being Taylor starting and Leaburn dropping out, apparently rested.

The Charlton TV commentary didn’t work for the whole of the first half, and they used the Walsall one for the 2nd, so I followed by different means and Addicks delivered a thoroughly professional performance.

Ahadme headed in the opener on 16 minutes after a peach of a cross from Coventry. Godden then took advantage of an errant back pass, rounded their keeper, to tuck away a second just before the half-hour mark.

Unlike at Southend we kept our foot on the gas (no pun intended) and went in at the break dominant.

Walsall brought a couple of subs on and had their best patch at the beginning of the 2nd half but we weathered that and with the pace of Small and TC on we stretched the game and finished the stronger.

With five minutes left Ahadme scored his second with a strongly won header, then in injury time Small’s cross found its way to TC who finished well to complete a comprehensive win.

Winning is a habit, and that result was for the 870 Addicks who made their way up the motorway.

🎙️”Right now there’s a team that wants to play for this football club, that work hard for the football club. I’ve watched Charlton over the years…. You tell me..”

⭐️ Terry Taylor

🏟️ 6,161 (862 Addicks)

…….a cup game that we habitually fail to turn up for away (or at home for that matter) so this was a most welcome turn up! And goals to boot! Hooray!! Can we see a bit more of this please?

wow fantastic at least we know if we get relegated we can beat a couple of league two sides and get promoted back to league one for another ten years I’ve had enough of the way this club has been treated and used over the years our best result is against league two opponents what had happened to a really great community club with useless owners and managers

Danny, You are 100% correct and yes seen over 7 decades of support and I am one of those who give credit when it is due and certainly very valid criticism as it should be.
I did not expect that yesterday, but see if we can win the even , more important one on Tuesday.
Also, I wish Jones would wind his neck in a bit with his comments but it does not help with the same stale question from the apparently the only supporter we have the one and only Terry Smith but he is not a supporter but a follower and he never pays an admission entrance fee home and away but loves the limelight and all the free hospitality.
Just saying, but like everyone else perhaps this will be a start of better things but we have been here so often and being sold down the river.

This time last season we lost to Gillingham…

I’m pleased for Gassan Ahadme, we haven’t made the best use of his height and to be fair he hasn’t made the best use of it either. Against Burton Coventry tried a similar lobbed cross, just over the defence and he headed tamely at the keeper, this time he found the corner, so I’m wondering if it’s a coincidence or deliberate that we’ve put two crosses into the same area?

I’m also pleased that TC got on the scoresheet, he has had a few near misses and needed the goal.

Hopefully the goals will have done both players some good.
