Lucas Ness moves to Notts County

So, that is one off the wage bill, although Lucas Ness’ pay was not in the same bracket as Scott Fraser.

I am pleased Ness has got his move, and Notts County are a good club.

He has signed a 3-year contract with County and is described by them as “a signing made with the long-term in mind.’

Ness had some outstanding games for the Addicks’, especially in our League Cup run under Dean Holden, but like a lot of players the managerial upheaval affected him, and never got a real run in the first team. Then, struggling with little injuries, he never appeared to be in Nathan Jones’ plans.

In fact when he signed a contract extension last season, I was of the opinion then that it was solely to make sure we get a fee and be able to insert a sell-on when he left the club.

The 22-year old made 44 Charlton appearances in total. Good luck Lucas.

Agreed….one of the players who always seemed to try his best when he wore the shirt…..unfortunately never got a good run in the squad…….good luck to him at Notts County.

Totally agree with your comment CA, Lucas will flourish at Notts County and I’m confident he will enjoy first team football and help the team.progress.

All the best Lucas and thank you for what you did for Charlton, you will be missed

This was inevitable the moment the squad shirt numbers were released with Lucas Ness not being allocated one.

Good luck to him…this makes sense all round. We get a wage off our books and hopefully we’ve negotiated a sell-on clause.

Currently Lucas Ness would be behind a number of players to get into the matchday squad – Alex and Zach Mitchell, Lloyd Jones, REG, Gillesphey and there are suggestions that Josh Edwards could play centre-back if needed. His career was stagnating and the few times he played last year he understandably looked a bit off the pace and then he got dropped. I don’t know where he fits in at Notts County but he’ll surely go into their matchday squad and get regular football which is what he needs at the moment.

That just leaves the other player not allocated a squad number – Scott Fraser – to be shifted on and one or two others to go out on loan.

I must admit that I like Ness, but at 22 he needs to be playing regularly. If he had stayed he would have been cover for the right side of the back 3 where we have several options already.

Young Gough is a very promising player and if he progresses well in the U21s this season could come into the reckoning in 2025 for a right hand side of the back 3 position. Zak Mitchell, REG and Asiimwe already give cover for the position.

I hope Ness does well at Notts County and we can take advantage of the sell-on clause in his contract.
