Jones takes cleaver to squad

Charlton have issued the names of players that will leave and stay for next season.

The only player offered a new deal was Tyreece Campbell, who has signed a new unknown length contract.

The club said that Nathan Jones would waste no time in telling players their futures, and as expected he has taken a large cleaver to the squad.

What is unknown at this stage is who of those that remain in contract will actually kick off the new season with us or at least make it through the summer window.

Jones talked about carrying a smaller squad but 21 players remain contracted to the club, they are:

Karoy Anderson, Chuks Aneke, Nathan Asiimwe, Conor Coventry, Rarmani Edmonds-Green, Tayo Edun, Scott Fraser, Macaulay Gillesphey, Aaron Henry, Harry Isted, Lloyd Jones, Daniel Kanu, Miles Leaburn, Alfie May, Ashley Maynard-Brewer, Conor McGrandles, Zach Mitchell, Lucas Ness, Kayne Ramsay, Terry Taylor, Tennai Watson.

Aneke, Edun, Fraser, Henry, McGrandles and Taylor have the biggest question marks over them and I would not be surprised if the summer season sees rumours about Alfie, Miles and Gillesphey.

The goalkeeping situation has to be sorted too, and for the time being at least George Dobson will be heading to Hungary.

No contract offers to Kazenga LuaLua or Connor Wickham and no desire from Jones to make a pitch for any of Tyreeq Bakinson, Panutche Camará, Lewis Fiorini, Freddie Ladapo or Louie Watson that were on loan.

Farewell and thank you then, in differing proportions, to Richard Chin, Michael Hector, Diallang Jaiyesimi, Jack Payne, Terell Thomas and Lewis Ward.

A busy summer ahead.

The vital thing now is for Scott to follow Nathan’s instructions on new players and fully back him.

Nathan is fully aware of what he needs Subject availability.

Alfie May is a must, Dobson and Coventry to me did very much the same job, creativity and flair is what we lacked it’s why we drew so many matches we had too few out of the blue and total surprise moments. N

Getting shot of two centre-backs and a deep reserve goalkeeper points to us signing two, preferably experienced they shall not pass centre-backs and I assume a starting keeper – as neither Harry Isted nor AMB really impressed. NJ was quite brutal about our defensive lapses after the last couple of games (prior to that he was diplomatic – but no doubt seething) so I could see these changes coming.

I think Miles Leaburn will go – but maybe/probably in the January window while we can get some cash for him. Chelsea were said to be sniffing about and while we have cash behind us we won’t be able to turn down a multi-million bid.

I can’t see us selling Alfie, what would we get for him? And selling a 20 goal striker is only worth contemplating if you’ve got someone lined up who can score more than he does.

Chuks is going to stay, NJ was bigging him up mid-week and with his injury record no other club will touch him.

It’s a shame we’ve lost Dobbo, but realistically we need a Mark Kinsella type player in the box-box midfield role while Conor Coventry can do the defensive midfield stuff.

As others have said – of the 22 players retained I’d expect several to be moved on, Scott Fraser and Conor McGrandles were loaned out and it seems have no future under NJ and a couple others will be shifted on/loaned out.

A striker needed, a creative midfielder, an option at no 10 and the above mentioned two CBs and a keeper. Get the spine right and the rest falls into place.

What I don’t understand is the club stated in January that they were signing players with an eye to preparing for 24/25 season. But Gillesphey and REG made very few appearances, also early season signings Jones, Edun and T. Watson were rarely used. Asiimwe who was generally acknowledged by the CAFC faithful as a very good prospect was overlooked and only made a few appearances for the U21s. I think that he is earmarked for a move to a higher status club, possibly West Ham as the Coventry deal when details were revealed in the annual report seemed overly generous. At the time of his move paper talk had him categorised as worth £1M.

The present squad is nowhere near good enough. With Hector and Thomas gone we do not have any central defenders who are strong enough in the air.

On the evidence of this season’s signings made by AS I am certain that recruitment will need NJ’s input as per Small and Ramsey.

I just hope that the list of released players that one name is nit on it.First what do the following list of players have in their era of success: Brian Clough, Jimmy Greaves Alan Shearer, Ian Wright, Jamie Vardy.

They were all Natural Goal Scores.

Message to Nathan, now we have one in our ranks – Alfie May. Build the squad around him. Fingers crossed on this.

It doesn’t as yet feel like a cleaver to me.

Out of those released, only Hector and Thomas were regular starters. Payne and Darjeeling, can’t remember how to spell his name, have gone but they would have never got into the team if they’d stayed.

I guess it depends on what happens to those players still under contract?

That is very true Martin. Still plenty of fat in that squad.

Very kind Burt, and thank you for the comment. How did you become a CAFC fan?

I think the trouble buying abroad for a third tier team is judgement. Is a Serie B or C player going to cut it in England? Does a young player block the progress of a home grown player? Is an experienced player going to want to move to the third tier at his stage of their career?

From a little research there are no current Spaniards or Italians in L1. A few Spaniards in The Championship.

my friend @ school when I was about 15 or so , took me to my first match. I remember the towering east terrace . We used to always stand there . Massive.

the football was always good and exciting win or loose .

I wish I could remember all the players of about that time , memory not as good as it used to be .

but players I used to enjoy watching, len glover exciting winger . Keith peacock same .

Eddy FIrmani. Great captain Bailey . Hortons free kicks thunderous kicks .

the South African boys , Hewie in particular .

I’ll stop there. I take your point about the Italian and Spanish footballers. Perhaps when we are back in the Premier league.
