Sacked by text
A classy move by old Etonian Charles Harry Finlayson Methven and ex-defensive clogger and career CEO Jim Rodwell.
Tells you all need to know about the men we now have to put our trust in selecting the next Charlton Athletic manager to join the circus.
In a reversal of roles from last time, Jason Pearce has been handed the interim manager moniker with Anthony Hayes assisting.
Pearcey’s job will be to steady the ship and instill some defensive basics back onto the training ground this week. They won’t be involved in any transfer activity I suspect allowing Andy Scott free reign.
The timing of the move is truly astonishing when you think of the importance of this week. If you were Jack Payne, Conor McGrandles, DJ or Charlie Kirk would you take a move unless it was financially beneficial? Don’t we have to offload players before we can bring any in, or was that just more misinformation?
Meanwhile in what is the weakest looking L1 for a number of years, how does Scott, Methven and Rodwell sell the club to players after those people just off-loaded a manager they appointed and gave him just five league games after their official takeover of the club.
Despite some saying no one wants the job, someone will always take it, but whether those with any credibility or a favourable record will want it is another thing.
Numerous names have been mentioned by fans – Chris Wilder, Nathan Jones, Darren Moore, Danny Cowley, Michael Appleton. Others pander for Chris Powell or Lee Bowyer.
Spending money to take a current working manager with decent stock such as Mark Bonner, Chris Wild or Luke Williams seems futile.
What a mess.

Is it “shitshow” or “shit show”? Perhaps British and American usage differs.
Haha. I’m not sure Scott. But both variations apply in this example.
I recall that was Sandgaards preferred method as well.
Spineless bstards.
I bet Alfie’s glad he signed up, and this Chem bloke as well – almost time to dust off the pink pigs.
Don’t forget the taxis, crisps, balloons with dubious contents and the small footballs I can’t wait !!!
The owners have no idea what they are about to possibly encounter on matchdays..
Spineless, cowardly and above disrespectful to fire by text a guy the owners appointed.
I hope they don’t sleep nat night all who were party to Dean’s dismissal.
I hope Pearcy and Anthony can settle things for Saturday and beyond.
Getting rid of Dean Holden now probably has far more to do with the SMT avoiding signing new player’s before the transfer window closes than finding a new manager. All this is complete nonsense unless the Manager – be it Pep Guardiola or Jason Pearce – has the necessary quality additions that the squad desperately needs. This is now extremely unlikely given the time and financial constraints. I think this is part of a deliberate ploy to avoid the SMT from having to put their hands in their pocket. So glad that l decided to hold-off from buying a ST until l had seen the strength of ambition demonstrated by the SMT! Holden was never given the necessary resources so, in my eyes, if Holden has gone then so should Methven.
Totally agree
Darren Ferguson refuses to speak to Charlton after being approached…
Thank god he did….we need better
Rodwell and Darragh MacAnthony are mates. Could be a PR stunt to show we are looking.
I fear you could be right CA…
I bet Curbs and Brownie have their phones on
They wouldn’t pay Curbs what he’d want. Brownie would be a very useful coach down there.
They should use Brownie…he has his coaching qualifications and has already highlighted issues.
Stephen Henderson appointed temporary goalkeeper coach tonight to help Pearcy…just out
I usually find you to be bang on the money, but you seem to have changed tack slightly on this issue. You were scathing about Holden after the Port Vale match and wanted to see positive action. That clearly didn’t materialise at Oxford, in fact it was even worse.
It was obvious that things weren’t going to get better and Holden had to go. The players would’ve known it as well, so it was best he went sooner rather than later. I understand your point in regard to the players on the cusp of leaving, but Scott is in charge of transfers now. If he has told them they’re not in our plans and they resist they will only cause more problems for themselves.
It was the right move at a unfortunate time. As for sacking by text – I’m not sure that’s really any of our business and I don’t particularly like the holier-than-thou attitude that is currently being displayed over it. If I was about to pay someone off for a job badly done then I wouldn’t be feeling particularly charitable either to be honest.
A phone call or meeting is more respectful..and text is out of order.
Shame we live in a text culture and I have to disagree with your view.
Yes I agree, but we don’t know the full circumstances. I also feel that it’s not really any of our business. Are we really going full out mutiny over the way a poorly performing manager was sacked? Maybe we cause many of our own problems at this club…
Luke – not sure I changed my tack. I liked, still do, Holden but was giving honest assessment’s about how we were structured tactically. I was hopeful for an improvement, but concerned he didn’t have it in his locker. Nonetheless, sacking a bloke who they championed after five games with no obvious back-up plan and by text stinks of another load of incompetent wannabes unable to operate a football business of a club of our standing.
I have now for about a decade pointed my finger solely at owners and not managers – Fraeye aside, yet it wasn’t even his fault that he was completely unsuitable for the job.
Fair enough CA, once bitten and all that. Personally I think that he had to go – the players would’ve known he was hanging by a thread and so I doubt this will be drastically changing any plans.
Its early days for these owners, so we should try to be supportive for now at least. I’m not sure what plan they could’ve had – if it had come out that they were approaching managers before Holden was sacked, how would that have gone down? Feels like they’re damned either way.
Sacking Holden was the right decision, so let’s try to be positive until proven wrong!
There’s a tendency for us to jump on the outrage bus if it suits our own agenda.
Where has this idea of sacked by text come from, I’m not suggesting it isn’t true but who has confirmed this another outraged supporter.
Dean Holden, lovely bloke and I did genuinely warm to him but the old adage “nice guys never win” or something like that and I know it’s only 5 games seemed clueless to stop the rot and glaring errors of last season and this. Yes, there are mitigating circumstances but his managerial cv doesn’t exactly stack up! Not that the last 3 manager cv’s did either.
Like most, I’m not confident the next appointee will be any better but that’s Charlton for ya and has been for some time now!
The fired by text was confirmed by Holden camp….why lie ?
Well lying is part of the PR package to promote the outrage that all carry in their briefcase, when feeling hard done by. You only have to look at politicians to know this.
As I said, I’m not saying isn’t true but it’s important to think about the position all parties take up when feeling aggrieved.
Hi Martin
I can confirm 100% it was by text.
I’m not able to name my source but trust me it happened.
Ok, then that is very shoddy, although not that surprising in the world we live in today where decency is a lost art!
And to add insult to injury they are now letting the world and his friend know about every tom dick and harry they are begging to take the job. Not that Sir Chris is a tom dick or a harry but how embarrassing is all this. Is this their idea of a selection process? Takes me back to Miere.
Ah, but LP. Meire interviewed 15 managers in one evening!
Agree, this is amateur hour. Clearly no plan in place before they sacked Holden.
Chris Powell has also declined the job and who can blame him.
They’ll appoint Vera who makes tea at Sparrows Lane…
She was a good centre half in her day!! Lol
Yes she was great in the air and dominated the midfield.
Also it will put off some for applying when they are told who has rejected Charlton.
Total amatuers….lack of knowledge and out of their depth..shambles!!!
This whole episode says a lot about our new owners, and I don’t think much of it is positive. The timing and manner of dismissal will have most of us thinking ‘here we go again’…
I’m not sure how it all went so badly for Holden, as his impact on taking over last season was quite impressive, and you would have thought that considering he was the new owners man, they would have given him some time.
You can’t help wonder if Dean Holden realised that there would be a few broken promises, regarding transfers, thus why he was packing the team with youth(to maybe prove a point) before the transfer window shuts?
It’s no surprise that those approached thus far have shown no interest in taking up the job. With nothing more than a relegation battle in the offing only a desperado queuing down the Job Centre would willingly take up the poisoned chalice of CAFC Manager. To obtain a manager of any real potential the management will have to dip into that promised pot of dosh. However there has been no sign of that when it comes to playing staff, so I think it unlikely to be forthcoming for a manager. So who is doing a good managers job in The National League?
